The venue was built in 1922 to bring theater, entertainment, and movies to the visitors and people of Hawaii. In 1984, the theater was saved by its citizens and became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. After a brief shutter, the theater reopened in 1996 with the interior rejuvenated and ready to accept hundreds of thousands of patrons annually.
