Bucharest Hotels

The ornate buildings of Bucharest can compete with any of the major European cities in their beauty, and the Romanian capital is slowly becoming a stylish city break destination in its own right. The architecture from days before the Royal family were overthrown is being restored, and upmarket restaurants and boutiques are hidden down stylish, tree-lined boulevards. Lovers of history will be drawn in by the communist past of Bucharest, and many of the museums and attractions are dedicated to the changes that the city has gone through.

Things to see

The Palace of Parliament, known locally as Palatul Poporului, looks like a grand, historic building, yet only dates back to the 1990s. Within these stone walls, you'll find the chambers of Bucharest's government, as well as conference halls, shops, and many large vacant spaces where you'll still find grand arches and chandeliers. There are daily tours available in different languages where you can learn the tumultuous history of the building and Romania in general. Many of Bucharest's buildings have a similarly fascinating story, with the Unirea Shopping Center, which looks like a regular shopping mall with its neon signs and huge display windows, having been transformed from a communist owned department store. The story of the country is best views through the artworks hanging in the National Museum of Art of Romania, the former royal palace which was reclaimed during the 1989 revolution. Although damaged at the time, you'll still see the original architectural features, from pillars to archways, and can enjoy art from medieval times up until the present day.

Hotels in Bucharest

Bucharest hosts a wide variety of contemporary hotels, many of which have 4 or 5 stars, and you can enjoy comfortable accommodation at a low nightly rate. Many hotels have features such as restaurants and bars, as well as complimentary WiFi in public areas to help you plan your trip. Those travelling for work will enjoy business centres and meeting rooms, as well as laundry facilities to keep you looking sharp. There's a wide choice of guestrooms available, from basic singles to suites, and you'll enjoy amenities such as minibars, safes, LCD televisions, bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary newspapers.

Where to stay

The practically named Sector 1 is the heart of the city, with business districts, wealthy neighborhoods, and most of the up and coming areas. Floreasca is where you'll find glimmering skyscrapers and high rise blocks, with attractions such as the Promenada mall with its designer stores and upmarket restaurants. Piața Unirii is where the 4 sectors meet, and has one of the largest town squares in the city, with a giant fountain and several lanes of traffic zooming around you. This area is a busy transport hub for the metro, trams, and buses, with lots of business focused hotels for travelers who like to be close to the action.

How to get to Bucharest

Henri Coandă International Airport is the busiest airport in Bucharest, and is conveniently located in the northwest of the city. Many major and budget airlines land here from across Europe, Russia, and the Middle East, and there's a metro station outside the terminal which takes you directly to the city center. Bucharest North railway station, or the Gara de Nord is the main hub for rail traffic in Romania, and as well as offering a large number of domestic services, there are also trains running across Eastern Europe and into Russia.
