Top neighbourhoods in Edinburgh

Old Town Edinburgh

Old Town Edinburgh's medieval charm unfolds along cobblestone streets where bagpipers perform against dramatic castle backdrops. The Royal Mile buzzes with energy as visitors duck into centuries-old closes and wynds to discover hidden treasures. Museums like the National Museum of Scotland showcase Scottish heritage while St. Giles' Cathedral's crown spire dominates the historic skyline. Traditional Scottish pubs serve hearty fare alongside famous whisky selections, perfect after exploring the neighborhood's shops offering tartans and Celtic jewellery. Most attractions sit within a 10-minute walk, with nearby Waverley Station connecting you to broader adventures throughout Scotland.

New Town

New Town dazzles with its gorgeous Georgian architecture and UNESCO status, making every stroll feel like you've stepped into a Jane Austen novel. Art lovers can lose themselves in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery while shopaholics hit the upscale boutiques along George Street. When you're done exploring elegant squares and historic townhouses, the Assembly Rooms offer a perfect peek into Edinburgh's refined past. The area serves up everything from fancy Michelin-starred restaurants to cosy traditional pubs where whisky flows freely. Princes Street tram stops and nearby Waverley Station make getting around super easy, while charming boutique hotels in converted Georgian buildings let you live like 18th-century royalty without the powdered wig.

Leith

Leith blends maritime charm with artistic edge along Edinburgh's historic waterfront. Stroll The Shore promenade where historic pubs and seafood restaurants line the Water of Leith. Once a working dockland, this area now buzzes with independent galleries and studios while maintaining its authentic character. The Royal Yacht Britannia offers a glimpse into royal maritime history. Dining ranges from Michelin-starred restaurants to cosy ethnic eateries reflecting the area's diverse culture. Hop on the tram at The Shore or Port of Leith stops for easy access to Edinburgh's city centre, just 15-20 minutes away. Boutique hotels in converted warehouses and waterfront apartments make ideal bases for exploring this vibrant district.

West End

The West End charms with elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture along tree-lined streets. Dean Village's historic atmosphere offers peaceful riverside walks by the Water of Leith. Johnnie Walker Princes Street and Edinburgh Gin Distillery delight whisky enthusiasts, while the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art showcases world-class exhibitions. Nearby Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile provide classic Scottish experiences. Upmarket boutiques and fine dining establishments cater to luxury seekers, with sophisticated cocktail bars and whisky lounges dominating the evening scene. The Usher Hall hosts cultural performances throughout the year. Haymarket Station and convenient tram lines make exploring Edinburgh easy, with most attractions within walking distance.

Stockbridge

Stockbridge feels like a secret village hiding in plain sight within Edinburgh. Cobblestone streets lead to Georgian sandstone buildings where independent shops and galleries flourish. The bustling Sunday market on Saunders Street showcases vendors selling everything from artisanal cheeses to vintage treasures. The Water of Leith provides peaceful walking paths, while the nearby Royal Botanic Garden offers acres of natural beauty. Cosy gastropubs and casual bistros dominate the dining scene with Scottish fare at moderate prices. Most accommodation is elegant Georgian townhouse B&Bs or boutique guesthouses that maintain the neighborhood's intimate atmosphere. "I chose this hotel for the proximity to the Royal Mile. It turned out to be better than expected. I was in Edinburgh during the Fringe festival and I was able to attend the Military Tattoo. Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"I loved this hotel because we were treated so kindly throughout our entire stay. The staff answered all the questions we had, and no request was too big. We were even allowed to check into our room in the morning when we arrived completely exhausted from a red eye flight. This was hugely appreciated. The hotel is in an old building. Edinburgh is OLD! They have kept it up though and we had a clean modern bathroom with both walk in shower and soaker tub. Nice bath products. We had a mini fridge in our room, and the bath towels and bed linens were lovely. Side tables for the bed and reading lights. The only tiny thing that could be done is to replace the carpet. Ours had stains on it. It wasn’t a huge room but big enough for us and our luggage. We had a quiet room not facing the view of the castle, which we preferred as we kept our windows open. The breakfast was incredible. We could choose from a hot and cold buffet, and we could order a main breakfast item from the menu. There was a coffee machine so we could have cappuccino (and I could get decaf) every morning. Such a treat for us as we never go out for coffee. I would highly recommend staying here. It is also perfectly located to walk the entirety of Old Town and New Town and everything in between. Stay here and you don't need transport (unless you don't like to walk). PS their staff could give a course in hotel hospitality!!!"

"Added breakfast and it was well worth 12.50 There’s a lot of deferred maintenance in the building. Pool and changing areas were dirty and had mold on the ceiling. Hoses were going through the changing room. We went to the pool and hot tub in the evening and it was really very crowded, my tip is to go when all of the families are at the zoo. I had the place to myself. Area is ok not a lot going on if you’re not going to the zoo. It was ok but I don’t think I would go back and stay just for the property"
