- Adventure

- Families
- Photo
The Ammonite Slab (la Dalle aux Ammonites), just north of Digne-les-Bains in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, contains more than 1,500 fossilized examples of these 200 million year old underwater creatures. This world famous 350 m² slab was discovered in the 19th century but its full extent only became known during the second half of the 20th century.
Although there are some other invertebrates on the slab the ammonites make up 90% of the fossils with the largest of them as big as 70 cm in diameter. In other words, an absolute must-see if you are at all interested in fossils but also likely to please most people; especially as it doesn't cost anything.
