The building has an interesting history and is furnished and equipped in authentic detail. The location is easy walking distance from the Dar ferry; across the street is a fishermen's beach, which is also where many boat tours start. Food was good both in the main restaurant (overlooking the beach) and in the small coffee shop at street level.

Positive -architecture of the hotel is very unique Average breakfast. Negative- dirty room cocroches in the room very uncomfortable bed noisy location slow sevice at the restaurant uneatable foot served for a dinner dirty chairs and table at the restaurant some staff with attitudes Overall below average hotel, definitely not recommended. I am also not sure if I got the correct room. I booked the presidential suite. The room look different than the one from the expedia website picture and does not feel like a presidential at all- very basic . Good that we stayed only one night.

Wonderful Seaside Hotel
Gorgeous Islamic-inspired design at a seaside hotel steps away from the ferry terminal. If you arrive by ferry there is no better location for convenience and value. Beautiful rooms, interior courtyard with pool and balconies over looking it. A hilarious number of staircases. Breakfast buffet was diverse and very tasty. Staff exceptionally friendly, and over the top accommodating! Excellent value for money. I would love to stay again.

A charming old-fashioned hotel, that reminds you of the history of Zanzibar and Stonetown, its capital in particular. Lovely antiques, and gorgeous views of the waterfront and its activities from the breakfast room as well as from some of the rooms at the front. (We had one). Spectacular sunsets. Only fault of the hotel, is that the safety deposit box in the room didn't work. Also, it is a dry hotel, no alcohol, but there are charming bars everywhere, and there's Freddy's pub across the road. We will return for another stay.

If you booked a "Presidential Suite, Sea view ", be warned you may not get one with a balcony although the pictures clearly show a balcony (on both their website and Expedia). They claimed it was some sort of a different room type and they'd upgrade me if it were to become available instead of admitting their mistake. Of course the upgrade never happened or any sort of refund/appropriate adjustment made. Overall the staff were friendly / has the location going for it. Convenient area / ocean across the hotel. Breakfast wise, unfortunately most of the hot/fried items were room temperature except for the boiled eggs and soup. Omelette station is good. Excellent fruit selection. Shower situation is weird in the presidential suites. Be prepared for water everywhere since the rain shower has no curtains, walls.. just open not to mention half the tub is taken over by the fixtures sticking out so there is no way to contain the water within the tub.

Good location but poor quality
The staff was nice but the place could use some work. No AC in room and while asked several times- they told me it was ok while it just circulated air. At one point I just decided to leave and only then was I told I could be given another room. By this time- bathroom was a sauna, very dusty and only air circulating was recycled. Would not recommend.

Our first trip to Stonetown was really magical and Mizingani contributed to that experience. It's location on the waterfront was spectacular and paying for the seaview was worth standing on the Livingstone room balcony and watching the African sunset on the ocean. Accomodations were acceptable, historical architecture was exceptional. You are staying in this place for the chance to imagine yourself back in time. The staff are friendly and hospitable. Tips are always welcomed though not asked for. We recommend American's adjust their expectations and focus on the experience. It was amazing. Oh and definately eat at the South African Fish Market on the pier just a few blocks down. It was fantastic. Don't forget to arrange a paid walking tour of Stonetown, it's worth not getting lost and seeing extra nooks and crannies.

We have visited Zanzibar many times. This is the first time we stayed at this hotel and it will be the last. The staff are very friendly, but the service was very poor. I paid extra and reserved the presidential suite. After arriving to our room, I realized they had put us in a regular sea view room. When I asked about the suite, I was told it was undergoing some renovation. There was no offer to reimburse us for the incorrect room, nor any offer for any extra service. In fact, we even tried to get a later check out and we’re denied. Unfortunately they already had my money for suite thru Expedia…so beware when booking your room..!!

This is a very old and historic building used by the sultan as a vacation home. The common areas are all stunning from the pool, the riad and the water fountain in the court yard. The vibes are 10/10. Rooms are massive. You will feel like a rockstar on your in your giant suite overlooking the water. The balcony was HUGE and the best view. It’s the perfect spot for Instagram photos! The downside is the rooms are very dated. While I recognize the property is very old, things like a modern bedding, a duvet, new flooring and a fresh coat of paint would give this property a nice face lift. 8/10 Breakfast was decent. You can order fresh eggs and there is an assortment of fruits, pastries, and hot items. I found the hot items to be a bit sub par so I just ate the eggs and toast and fruit and I was happy. 8/10.

Overall, I loved the property, but 2 things aggravated me. I booked 2 rooms for which I thought was for 4 people (2/2). When I arrived, my reservations were for 3 people (2/1). Both rooms were identical but because there were 4 people, they charged me $20 a night for the fourth person. Yes, very upset since the room with 2 people was the same price as the one with 1 person. The other issue was the shower head. Bathroom was beautiful, but when I say that showerhead needs to be replaced...water was coming from every direction. up/down/both sides, left/right, left/right side, top/bottom, sw/nw, front and back. Staff was very nice and helpful. Would I stay again...Yes, but best believe I will check my numbers on the reservation.
