We stayed at the Taj in Colombo earlier this year; and compared to that property, this one just fell a bit flat. The bed was super comfy, the location was great, but a lot of the details just weren’t there for a 5 star hotel. The amenities in the bedrooms were small, single use plastics which is sad to see in 2024. The bedroom was a good size; but very dated and old-fashioned.
I informed the hotel a few days before arrival that we were travelling for our honeymoon. A day before arriving; the hotel emailed to ask if we were travelling for a special occasion. Again, I told them it was our honeymoon. But then nothing at all was done to mark or acknowledge the occasion.
We had a dinner in the Bombay Brasserie; which was by far the most expensive meal we had in SA, but it was also one of the most mediocre. Service was good and nothing we ate was bad, but it was just completely forgettable and I know in a month I won’t remember anything I ate.
We did the whisky tasting in the whisky bar, which was nice, but there was no actual bar in the ‘whisky bar’ and a TV was blaring football so it felt far more of a sports bar, than an intimate and cozy whisky snug. We got the menu with the tasting notes of the whiskies, but the menu was clearly just cut out with scissors and had jagged edges.
One day we got turndown service; one day we didn’t.
Nichole though at reception was fantastic. we mentioned these issues and she sent some wine to our room.
