TLDR; Pros: Decent place with a great price | Cons: NOT a hostel and in a busy area
Room was fine, shower had good water pressure, the staff was kind and very helpful, and I felt perfectly safe with them. For the price, it's a great choice.
One particular good experience - I had lost the outlet adapter for my charger before arriving and asked the staff where to buy a new adapter. They insisted they would buy it themselves. The guy came back in 15 minutes as promised, and had the adapter, I just paid him back the 1 USD it cost.
Issues:
1. The name. This is not "City Hostel," it is "City Hotel." I was confused when I arrived to see a different name, and I asked the staff and they said they use both names. I was pretty frustrated because I wanted a hostel, but this is just a hotel with a shared bathroom. If you are looking for a communal experience with other fellow travelers, you won't find it here.
2. The area. The area is in Azbakeyya. It's certainly an interesting place to visit as a tourist - a massive bustling market with vendors selling everything you can imagine. However, it is very disorienting and overwhelming in your first moments in Cairo. Thankfully the noise doesn't leak too much into the room, but the market itself is absolutely nuts, and it can be frustrating always walking in and out of it just to get to and from the hotel.
These irritated me, but the price is good, the staff does their best, and the room and bathroom are totally fine.
