I booked the this bed and breakfast for one night. I was supposed to arrive at 8 pm. My flight was delayed and then it took me 2 hours to arrive to the the bed and breakfast because several branches of the Milan highway were closed. I arrived at midnight could not communicate my delay to the property once on the road. Once I arrived, the cab driver called them, I buzzed them several times, and tried by all means to have them open the door. They didn't. I had to spend the night in the lobby of a hotel nearby. When I contacted them the following the day, they said I was not supposed to arrive after 8, and were by no means apologetic, nor understanding. The owner just ghosted me after I suggested that the late arrival was not my responsibility. I have traveled a great deal and stayed in all calls of lodgings, from 5-star hotels to hostels, and I have never seen anyone deny opening the door to me because of a delay (midnight is late to be sure, but not absolutely unreasonable). The owner had my WhatsApp, but did not care to text me or email to see what was going on, or at least to let me know they would not open the door for me. The cab driver, who was completely exhausted by the whole situation, had more care and compassion for me than the hotel owner, to whom I paid 90 euros I will never see again. He made sure I was safe, and took me to a hotel nearby, where the receptionist allowed me to stay until the following morning. I have never seen such a behavior.
