This turned out to be an excellent family holiday. We originally chose the tented camp option as it was the cheapest way for the four of us to stay on one of the private game reserves (Woodbury Tented Camp is located in the Amakhala game reserve), however I would now recommend this option over a regular lodge as it offered the perfect balance of adventure and comfort (electric blankets on the beds!).
The staff were all very friendly and our guide, Melumzi, did an excellent job of tracking down the animals big and small: lion (including cubs), elephant, white rhino, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, kudu, waterbuck, etc. He was great with the children and shared a number of amusing stories to help them remember the different types of antelope.
Our two night stay included four game drives (4pm and 6am each day - 3 hours each) and full board - the Expedia listing wasn't so clear about this.
There was one small hiccup initially because Expedia allowed us to book all four of us into one tent, which isn't allowed, however the Woodbury manager contacted us and very kindly offered us the use of a second tent at no extra cost. If you are planning to have more than two in a tent it would be best to contact Woodbury directly.
Likewise, if you are travelling with children under 6 you should check if this can be accommodated: in our case they were very happy to allow our 5 year old on the game drives, but this is not the case in all private reserves.
