10/10 Exceptional

On a several week trip to the UK during which I stayed at SEVEN different properties, the Baskerville Arms was the one I'll remember. It is a charming old place with even more charming owners. I got my best nights of sleep, my hottest showers with the best water pressure, and wonderful food and drink. They made me feel at home and it is the only stop of my stay that I eagerly plan to return to. They helped with some logistical problems, answered questions, and made me feel part of the family. My only regret is that they told me they plan to pull out the quirky and colorful carpets and replace with something I'm such will be much more stately but much less interesting. Whole-heartedly recommend!

Friendly welcome
Wonderful welcome. Food in the bar was really good. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Decor is old fashioned and tired but the new owners are going to be working on that over the next few months. Highly recommended.

Although the hotel is listed under Hay on Wye, there is almost no public transport between Clyro and Hay. If you don't have a car you must arrange taxis or be prepared to walk with your luggage from Hay on Wye to this property. The staff were very helpful when dealing with this shipwrecked voyager BUT don't count on it!

Clean rooms, good freshly cooked meals and pleasant staff. Room somewhat cramped and expensive for what it was but free parking and wifi made up for it.

Comfortable hotel in need of a bit of TLC
The rooms are clean. The hotel staff are pleasant and helpful. But the furniture is rather old, and the hotel needs to invest in some new beds, in particular. And the plumbing is rather noisy!

Family Room
Family room was old, musty, and dated. Room was not clean, carpet was not hoovered and bottom of mattress was frayed and stains on bed. Hot tap was cold tap in the shower. TV worked, TV remote didn't work. Bathroom very out dated.

Good value stay near Hay
We were kept awake by noise from the Thursday quiz night in the bar below, but when we went down for breakfast an hour early the ladies were happy to accommodate us--a good breakfast too. Noticed improvements since last visit 20 years ago.

go to the baskerville arms for excellent food
The pub side was good. The meals were excellent quality and value. Bar staff really good. On the hotel side the breakfast service let it down. Breakfast start time was too late and disorganised.

Does the job
It's basic, friendly, functional when it's a lovely place in a lovely setting and could be a bit more. Stayed for Hay Festival as very convenient for shuttle bus and it did the job. Percy and co all helpful and welcoming. Expensive rooms (but not at festival time) and cheap food - generous portions.

A welcome in the hillside, indeed!
The Baskerville Arms is well-run but relaxed. On booking I received an email from the manager, welcoming me (a nice touch from a small, privately-owned, inn). Even as inexpensive accommodation it's very efficient. The decor is a little dated but clean and freshly-painted, the carpets a little old but clean. The room itself was small but clean, bright and (unusually for a single room) with its own en-suite shower room, with tea & coffee supplied and a TV. If there was a minus point to the room it was the lack of a TV remote but I have no doubt that, had I asked, one would have been found for me. The breakfast was, refreshingly, a continental buffet but with freshly-made toast and croissants. A cooked option was available for a very reasonable price. Finally the service was exceptional. Friendly, relaxed, staff...a welcoming atmosphere...and even drinks service-to-the-table from the charming (non-resident) owner with a cheeky curtsy! Altogether a very pleasant stay with convenient access to Hay-on-Wye, Hereford, the Black Mountains, the Brecons and beyond, and particularly suitable (and large enough) for an inexpensive break for anyone from the single traveller and couples up to whole families.

convenient for Hay on Wye
Bedroom and evening meals were great. Friendly pub with accommodation. Breakfast selection was good - continental included in price but cooked option was possible. However breakfast waitress waa grumpy and unwelcoming. Breakfast room was freezing cold. Surely they could have heated it for booked guests?

Friendly hotel in beautifull area.
Very friendly hotel/pub, food was lovely in the bar, it's a local pub but as a visitor you are made to feel very welcome. Market day in nearby Hay on Wye is Thursday, its a beautiful town well worth a mooch around.

Nice Hotel, Great Staff very good Value for Money
Reviewed based upon the price I paid. The only thing I woudl say is that the Bathroom / Shower could do with modernising. However based on the price I paid I was very happy with the hotel. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Very nice walks in the area. Overall very good value for money
