Top neighbourhoods in Detroit

Downtown Detroit

City centre Detroit hums with the rhythm of sports fans heading to Comerica Park and Ford Field. The impressive Guardian Building towers among historic skyscrapers, while live music spills from venues like the Fox Theatre. Campus Martius Park offers a green oasis where office workers and visitors alike soak up the sun between exploring the city's rich architectural heritage. Catch performances at the Detroit Opera House or browse exhibits at local museums for a cultural fix. Metro stations at Campus Martius, Cadillac Centre, and Broadway make getting around a breeze, with plenty of hotels ranging from luxury to business-focused accommodation nearby.

Corktown

Corktown dishes up Detroit's oldest charm with a side of creative cool that's impossible to resist. Historic Victorian homes with fancy trim stand next to old factories now buzzing with art spaces and craft breweries. Michigan Central Station's dramatic tower watches over cobblestone streets where history and hipster vibes hang out together. The area pulses with live music venues and innovative restaurants that tell Detroit's comeback storey. Find everything from slow-smoked BBQ joints to farm-to-table spots scattered throughout this walkable district. Boutique hotels and charming bed & breakfasts in Victorian homes make perfect bases for exploring. The QLine tram and bus routes connect you easily, while the Detroit River waterfront waits just a short stroll away.

Midtown

Midtown Detroit buzzes with creative energy around the Detroit Institute of Arts and Museum of Contemporary Art. Wayne State University's Gothic buildings anchor tree-lined streets filled with galleries and experimental theatres. Cultural venues like the Majestic Theatre and Orchestra Hall offer endless entertainment options, while converted warehouses house artist studios breathing new life into industrial spaces. Getting around is easy with three metro stations and the QLine tram running along Woodward Avenue. You'll find everything from student-friendly cafes to farm-to-table restaurants, plus boutique hotels in historic buildings that showcase local art and industrial design elements.

Eastern Market

Eastern Market pulses with energy as vendors stack rainbow-hued produce and artisan foods in sprawling market sheds. Art lovers can wander between vibrant murals splashed across industrial buildings and eclectic galleries housed in historic brick warehouses. On Saturdays, the district transforms into Detroit's liveliest scene with food trucks, live music, and locals hunting for the freshest ingredients. The area serves up delicious soul food, Mexican, and Middle Eastern cuisine at casual eateries throughout the district. Most visitors explore on foot or bike, though the QLine tram and bus routes connect easily to city centre Detroit attractions. While accommodation is limited within Eastern Market itself, city centre hotels are just a short ride away.

Greektown Historic District

Greektown Historic District delivers Detroit's most delicious slice of Mediterranean heritage alongside casino thrills. Narrow streets lead you between family-run Greek tavernas serving flaming saganaki and authentic bakeries with flaky baklava worth the trip alone. Historic St. Mary's Romanian Orthodox Cathedral stands as an architectural gem, while the casino lights up the district after dark. Getting around is a breeze with the convenient Greektown Station and incredibly walkable streets. Accommodation centre around the Hollywood Casino at Greektown, keeping you close to the action. Fort Pontchartrain Detroit, a Wyndham Hotel

Fort Pontchartrain Detroit, a Wyndham Hotel

8/10 Good
"We had a great time at the hotel. I am a detroiter and remember hearing people talk about the Pontchatrain in high school. It has been renovated and I was surprised at how modern it was when I got there. Staff was great. They gave me a river view suite for the same price as the queen suite i paid for. I did not like the fact that parking was valet only and it was $45. I am very picky about strangers driving my car. So I found a nearby garage a negotiated a lower price and got them to allow me park it myself. We were on the 22nd floor with a great view. The room was nice and spacious. Breakfast was good. The only unfortunate thing was the rooftop restaurant Top of the Pontch was supposed to be open on Wed night, our last night there, and at the last minute it did not open. So we had a to go out on the town, which turned out to be nice. The two areas that could have been a cleaner within the hotel was the pool deck area - probably doesn't get used much. Behind the toilet on the wall in our room could have been cleaner also. We had a great time. Very relaxing."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Detroit

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most budget-friendly time to visit Detroit is between January and March, when hotel prices are typically lower. For those looking to explore the city’s key landmarks, cultural sites, and historical attractions, a stay of at least 2 to 3 days is recommended. During your visit, you can enjoy the vibrant theatre scene, lively music venues, and impressive architecture, as well as indulge in the local dining options. This timeframe offers great value for money, allowing you to experience the essence of Detroit while keeping your expenses in check.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To discover last-minute deals to Detroit on Hotels.com, start by exploring the DealsOpens in a new window or Last-Minute Deals sections, where you may find discounted hotel rates as your travel date approaches. Additionally, activating email alerts or push notifications from Hotels.com could keep you informed about flash sales and special promotions, helping you seize opportunities to save. The Smart Shopping tool available via the app allows you to compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you're more likely to know if prices drop or if rooms become available, enabling you to book that spontaneous getaway.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate based on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates may help you save on your stay in a hotel in Detroit. For those in search of distinctive accommodation, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised experience and can sometimes offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we'll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price is on the higher end, we’ll recommend more affordable dates, increasing the likelihood that you could secure a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive, but with Detroit's excellent public transport connections, you might discover a more affordable independent hotel further afield that remains well connected. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
