Learn more about Hakuba

Powder hounds flock to the Japanese Alps where Hakuba's world-class ski resorts offer runs that hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. Between face-shots of legendary snow, soak aching muscles in steaming onsen hot springs that feel like nature's perfect apology for a day of wipeouts. Summer transforms the area into a hiker's paradise with trails winding through Chubu-Sangaku National Park towards Mount Karamatsu's summit. The village itself maintains a refreshing authenticity despite its international fame. Local restaurants serve soba noodles with the reverence others reserve for fine wine. Don't miss Hakuba Happo-One for the most impressive terrain or Iwatake for panoramic alpine views that explain why the Japanese consider mountains sacred.

"One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at. Room was excellent with an amazing Mountain View. Full amenities and top notch service. Staff goes above and beyond and are personable and friendly, even as English speaking tourists. The breakfast was delicious and a perfect mix of made to order hot dishes along with a large spread of buffet items. The best hotel in Hakuba if you want a luxurious and relaxing experience."

Hakuba Ryujin Onsen RYOKAN SUI

10/10 Excellent
"Amazing staff very attentive and helpful. The room, the onsen are very clean and well maintained. The food was amazing. Steps from a couple of conbinis and good restaurants. Only slight downside is that it’s a bit of a walk (20 min) or a short drive to Goryu ski resort. It’s a 15min cab ride to Happo. Didn’t find the public buses to be as easy or convenient to use so we used cabs or walk."

10/10 Excellent
"Property was amazing. Staff was kind enough to accommodate my request for a private onsen room. Which I should have booked initially but didn't realize was an option. Shuttle bus stop at the front door will take you to various ski resorts in the area. Staff is excellent, helpful, kind. Restaurant is great! Had use of a ski locker as well. Full locker, not just a place to hang skus and poles. "

Hotel Sierra Resort Hakuba

Hotel Sierra Resort Hakuba

8/10 Good
"The property is nice, the onsen is a terrific feature and the staff were excellent and helpful with our many questions for inbound/outbound travel. However, for upwards of $400 per night, the dining options were rather basic and, given the hotel's somewhat remote location, the sporadic shuttle schedule and drop-off locations made the ski resorts somewhat of a challenge to reach."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Hakuba

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most affordable months to visit Hakuba are June, September, and November, when hotel prices are lower. For those looking to explore the region's key historical and cultural landmarks, a stay of at least 3 to 4 days is recommended. This duration allows visitors to enjoy a variety of budget-friendly activities, such as hiking in the stunning mountains, relaxing in natural hot springs, and experiencing the thrill of winter sports like skiing and snowshoeing. With great value for money during these months, your trip to Hakuba could be both enriching and economically sensible.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To discover last-minute deals to Hakuba, visit the DealsOpens in a new window or Last-Minute Deals sections on Hotels.com, where you may find discounted rates on nearby hotels as your travel date approaches. Additionally, enabling email alerts or push notifications can keep you informed about flash sales and special promotions, ensuring you don’t miss potential savings. The Smart Shopping tool available in the app allows you to compare hotel prices and amenities, so if prices drop or rooms become available, you're more likely to be the first to know, making it easier to book a spontaneous getaway.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may fluctuate depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so having some flexibility with your travel dates could help you potentially save on your stay at a hotel in Hakuba. For those seeking a distinctive experience, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised touch and may sometimes offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price is on the higher end, we’ll suggest alternative dates that could be more affordable, helping you find the best deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive, but thanks to Hakuba's outstanding public transport connections, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel a bit further out that remains well linked. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
