6/10 Good

The room needs curtains as the security lights shine through the blinds all night. Also the heating cannit switch off so its very hot and the road is too noisy to have the window open. Otherwise very good value

8/10 Very good

My wife and I booked the Gateway just a few days before our stay, as we were attending an event in Cardiff. It turned out to be a very good choice. I'd rang in advance to see about early check-in, which was helpfully accommodated by the staff, and our room was just what we needed for one night. It was comfortable and clean, there was parking outside, and the breakfast the following morning hit the spot too. It was no more than quarter of an hour on foot to Newport train station, all main road and into the centre, and we had no problems walking back after midnight. Don't expect high-class luxury but if you just need a base for your stay before going off elsewhere, you won't go far wrong.

Cheap and cheerful stay! Very basic room but great if all you need is a tidy room for the night. Would stay again.

A bit dated but clean!

The main areas are a bit dated but the room was modern, clean and comfortable. It's on a main road so a bit noisy at night. Short walk to the centre where there are restaurants , etc.

Very pleasant ☺️

Lovely clean modern room. Lots of clean fresh towels. Nice thick carpets and so no disturbance from below room. Large shower area with good water pressure. Sadly it had no shelf to put shampoo and shower gel whilst in there. Lovely white cotton bedding. The only minus with the room was that it was very warm, i know its i Wales and not noted for warm weather. A fan in the room would be a good addition just in case any more warm days bless Newport. Breakfast was plentiful and the ladies very pleasant too. I had requested ground floor if possible due to my poor mobility, i was emailed a day after booking to say no family room available on ground floor for my date. I asked for a room as near as possible to the stairs as i would manage them albeit slowly. We stayed in room 14 which was at the top of stairs. A really nice place and would definitely stay again.

Not the best

Breakfast times poor, parking is aweful. Dirty towels. Very noisy and disturbed sleep due to location next to the road.

Newport Stay

Room was on 3 floor three flights of stairs bit much for a OAP. Cigarette burn in sheet and broken Shower heat attachment mean you need to hold head to wash. Wifi was good and worked well, Breakfast was in different building had to got outside (Could get wet if raining) to other building, Breakfast was OK English or cereal or apples, fruit juices tea or coffee. Reasonably priced with parking. walking distance to town and food.

Basic

Very small but a nicely presented room given the cheap price. The shower was surprisingly strong. There is off road parking but it is limited and someone had to move for me to fit in. We didn’t have breakfast and instead walked to the Wetherspoons as we were leaving Newport on the train anyway.

Gateway

Hotel rooms have been re done but still I few little bits that just need finishing, no curtains only blinds that let light in from street lights n sun in morning. Could do with a fan just to keep it cooler instead of having to have windows wide open on a main road. We left at 7.30 and had to leave key n card on side of door frame as no key box and no staff around. We would come back, just a few little things to improve.

6/10 Good

Ordered a twin room but was put in a double room. Quickly corrected but not an ideal start. The young lady who was serving breakfast was very polite & helpful but wasn't to offer a vegetarian option for the cooked breakfast. Breakfast is great, if you like meat. Stayed here a year ago and service has dropped which is a shame as the room & location was perfect.
Mark, 2-night trip

2/10 Poor

On first appearance the room looked nice, at bed time I discovered body fluid stains on the bottom sheet and holes in the duvet cover, we used the top sheet to lie on, the bottom sheet was too small for the mattress, the toilet roll was virtually empty and I had to use tissues out of my bag, breakfast time was a disaster, the continental breakfast was extremely minimal, on the full breakfast only turkey rashers were on the menu, not offering normal standard bacon, i have intolerances and allergies to certain foods, so opted not to have the turkey rashers, my food came nicely presented and the staff are lovely, I cut into my sausage, the texture and colour didn't appear normal to me so I queried what the meat was and discovered it to be chicken which I am allergic to, I asked if anything else on my plate was cooked in the same pan as the sausage and was told that the hash brown was cooked with the sausage. If I'd have eaten these products then I would have been extremely poorly, the menu never stipulated that the sausages were made from chicken and we were never asked if anyone had any allergies. My breakfast was totally ruined. My overall experience is 2 out of 10 and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, the dining area acts also as a storage space as there are kitchen items and a oil filled radiator stored underneath& around a table, also a large linen press. How this establishment got rated as a hotel beggers belief. A partial refund would be most welcome

Good stay

The hotel is being refurbished but overall good value for money, breakfast was good too though no bacon available 😋
Kevin, 1-night trip

8/10 Very good

On site parking for 8 or 9 cars. Check in disappointing, after driving nearly 5 hours it would have been nice to sit and relax for the 25 m8nutes before check in, which is 3 o'clock. We were greeted by a locked door and a sign saying "Check in 3 o'clock." We were allocated a room in the seperate annexe, not so good, obviously, for breakfast or if reception was required, if it is raining. On check in the staff were polite and informative. The decor, in general, was excellent, modern and funcional. It seems everywhere has had a recent revamp/upgrade. The room was roomy and, also, in "as new" condition. The ensuite shower room was very well laid out with an excellent shower. Hot water was "a plenty" and very quick to reach temperature. One oversight, in our opinions, was the lack of heavy curtains. The blinds in the bedroom are not ideal for security or light ingress. Tea and coffee facilities provided, but, no milk ?? Too inconvenient, in the rain, to walk to reception just for that. The bed was comfortable, however, the sheet and quilt combination was not to our liking. Breakfast, a small time window, was available 7-8.30, not ideal except for business/working people. No sausage or bacon ?? Turkey rashers ?? I know why, but, you can't really call it a "full English." Unacceptable. "When in Rome." etc. Aisha, the lady serving/cooking our breakfast, was very friendly, efficient and attentive. Checkout was another "unmanned affair" being instructed to leave our key on the table.

Good value hotel

Nice clean and comfortable place, good breakfast too. All staff i met were friendly and helpful. The only issue i had was the external noise, it is on a very busy road and some windows didn't quite close fully. However I would definitely stay again.

Shower was held by zip ties, stains on the bedding but other than that it was alright for one night. Front desk staff not too friendly, I guess it depends on who’s there

Impressive hotel and didn't expect it

Hey all What a suprise this booking turned out to be. I cancelled initially to see if I can get a cheaper hotel, but rebooked for same price(😌🙏thankfully) £80 but worth it. It's in an ideal location of Newport, motorway within a mile away. The two major Welsh cities aren't far off - even Bridgend that I visited prior to checking in, isn't far away. The best thing about the hotel is it is operated by a family of people who care and provide the best customer service - a Pakistani family, so Muslims who book with the breakfast only option, can be rest assured that it is 100% halal. The signing in is easy and Umar makes it very quick and hospitable. There's loads of parking. Rooms are clean and very elegantly designed. Breakfast is delicious the young woman and the the chef provide excellent food and theres great options for breakfast too - thank you so much to you both. I was really impressed with the pear tree at the back outdoors as your directed to your room and the our host allowed us to take some for ourselves - the pears taste really nice by the way 😋 Forgot to mention there's not much to see in the actual city of Newport but shouldn't put you off from booking the hotel as I mentioned the other cities nearby. I'll be back at the hotel when I visit the North of Wales when I'm back soon. Overall the Gateway hotel is a smooth one night or a weekend stay - Thanks so much to the host and his family. Will be coming again in the future.

Upgraded

A lot of money has been spent on the hotel so you can safely ignore older reviews about the poor state of the property and furnishings. However the unfinished electrics are a bit concerning and the hotel signage needs improving - very easy to miss it.

8/10 Very good

Nice property that appears to be in the middle of a refurbishment. Reception staff had gone out when I arrived so had to wait to gain access to the property. Room was comfortable with newly fitted carpets, however no air conditioning or fan available, this meant leaving the window open and noise pollution from outside resulted in a disturbed sleep. Large shower in the bathroom with plenty of hot water and good pressure. Breakfast was average and only served until 8:30am.
