Avignon Hotels

Discover a city where Romanesque building facades are brightened by statuettes and colorful frescos, where the gentle waters of the Rhone are not-quite-spanned by the famous arches of a ruined bridge, and where villas and palaces have been transformed into elaborate convention centers and iconic museums, without losing sight of their glorious past. It’s all here in Avignon, a laid back city in the Provence-Alps, where every cobblestone alleyway oozes history and intrigue, despite the clamoring hustle and bustle of daily life.

Things to see

The medieval gothic façade of the Palais des Papes is only one reason to make the trek to this historic landmark, because this ancient fortress has many more wonders hidden behind its solid stone walls. Frescoed chambers, lofty archways, and indomitable battlements are all waiting to be explored, and the view from this elevated position overlooks the eddying waters of the Rhone. Its resonant chambers, with their ornate ceilings, are often used for events and conventions, a fitting use for a palace that was once the seat of power. Closer to the airport, the modern Parc des Expositions is a cavernous series of modern chambers and halls, where concerts, events, and tradeshows go on display throughout the year. There’s always an attraction to see, from wistful wedding shows to mega musical extravaganzas, and there are contemporary cafés on site if you plan to spend a full day here. In the center of Avignon, the Place de l'Horloge is a historic clock square, where 19th century buildings overlook a vibrant pedestrian precinct, filled with the overspill from traditional French cafés, a gaggle of animated street performers, and the colorful lights of a permanent carousel.

Hotels in Avignon

There are plenty of hotels in Avignon to suit every budget, from luxurious high-class spa hotels with elaborate palatial decor, swimming pools, and fairy-light covered courtyards, to modest inns with basic accommodation that still offer breakfast, WiFi, and enviable inner-city locations. If you plan to travel in Avignon center, you’ll find discount hotels and 5 star lodgings that are convenient for visiting the ruined arches of the Pont d’Avignon Bridge. Countless festivals were once held here throughout the year, eventually inspiring that famous schoolyard song, Sur le Pont D’Avignon.

Where to stay

Avignon might be a populous city but its core has the feel of a countrified French town. Its elevated main streets converge on pedestrianized corners, where seemingly random groups of market stalls congregate at the weekends to sell locally produced cheeses, wines, and other artisan products. Tight, narrow cobbled back streets follow a complex one way system that twists and turns through the old town, past Avignon hotels, shuttered restaurants, and innocuous doorways. Just north of the city, Le Pontet is a densely populated residential neighborhood, a far cry from the history that permeates the central streets. Here, modern homes and cheap Avignon hotels mingle with recognizable fast-food outlets and contemporary shopping malls.

How to get to Avignon

The Avignon-Caumont Airport is the city’s only method of arriving by plane, but apart from a budget airline or 2 it’s not a typical point of entry to the city. Most international travelers to Avignon arrive at Nimes to the southwest, or Marseille on the southeast coast. Onward travel is easy by train since the city has a main central train station and a dedicated line for the high-speed French rail network, the TGV.
