Where to Eat In Matheran - Spicy Seafood, Rich Curries, and Vegetarian Food

Find a place to stay

There's an impressive variety of places to eat in Matheran given its small size, with Maharashtrian cuisine the most readily available. But you'll also be able to enjoy Chinese, Punjabi, Gujarati, and Mughlai dishes, each with their own flavorful twist. Vegetarian food features prominently, but meat dishes are offered at some restaurants, too.

Typical dishes

Chikki is a popular local treat typically made with cashews or peanuts in crunchy, caramelized jaggery (Indian cane sugar). Vada pav, India's vegetarian version of the burger, is quintessentially Maharashtrian and widely available.

Thali (a selection of dishes served on a platter), pav bhaji (vegetable curry served with a soft buttery bread roll), and vada pav characterize Matheran's local cuisine and can be sampled at its eateries. Seafood fans should book a table at family-owned Kokan Katta, opposite the railway station, which offers fried fish, chicken, or mutton thali, as well as spicy, fried prawns. Shabbir's Biryani House, a few minutes walk from Juma Masjid, serves a variety of biryani dishes. There's indoor and outdoor seating at this modest restaurant, where the food takes centre stage.
