I stayed there 14 days. Hotel was very clean and cleaning crew was very thorough. Desk staff was outstanding, professional, friendly, helpful. I had a health issue beginning day 5 through end of my stay. Desk staff knowing this, brought a tray with hot tea and cup of ice to help with inflammation of my lungs each evening. The most amazing thing was when I went to checkout. A young man about 24 was behind the counter. He knew my situation and insisted to bring my 2 40 pound bags from my second floor room to the lobby. Once he did, he said his shift was over in 20 minutes and he was going to Amsterdam Central as well for his 45-minute train ride home. He insisted on taking my bags for me all the way to Amsterdam Central, a 15 minute walk. The young man not only wheeled my bags to the train station, but he took me to the kiosk to be sure I got the right train ticket, and even though it would make him miss his train and have to wait 35 minutes for another train, he took my and my luggage to the very spot where the train would pick me up and where I could be assured to get a seat. Where do you find such people today? Hotel Van Gelder. My deepest thanks and gratitude. If I ever return to Amsterdam, Hotel Van Gelder would be my only choice.
