Amazing hotel, amazing area.
A beautiful place to stay in beautiful surroundings. Hiroki-san took great care of us from the beginning, explaining everything and serving our meals. He was very kind, patient with my attempts at speaking Japanese, and welcoming.
The riverside room had an amazing view in the autumn. There were so many onsen to choose from, shared outdoor ones and six private ones, easily accessed. Extremely relaxing.
The food was kaiseki style - many, many dishes. Absolutely delicious dinner and breakfast.
The Kurokawa Onsen area is full of charm. We particularly enjoyed a local shop run by a man who makes pottery. He explained how they make the white glaze from a local plant.
There are more onsen that you could possibly visit, but other than Yamabiko, I highly recommend the cave onsen at Shinmeikan and the beautiful outdoor one at Ikoi Ryokan (bear in mind I’ve only seen the men’s sections).

We had a wonderful stay. The atmosphere, food, staff, and hospitality are amazing. We loved the onsen available on site, but also managed to visit other onsen in town (you can get an onsen hopping pass from the town visitor center). Overall very tranquil and relaxing. One thing to note is that the pillows can be small and you may need to ask for larger or additional pillows. Highly recommend and would visit again.

Great Ryokan. The property is beautiful and it's not far from the Kumamoto limousine bus stop (the hotel gives you rides to and from the stop anyway). Short walking distance to a bunch of restaurants and the main area of the town.
Top notch service and super clean. The outdoor onsen is incredible.
A few (minor) complaints:
-Some of the decorations are a bit tacky
-You only get one bath towel during your stay. If you want an extra one you have to pay extra. This seemed...weird given the price of this hotel.

We stayed at four onsen Ryokans during our trip and this was our favorite. The outdoor baths were wonderful. There are also 6 family indoor onsen open 24 hrs a day that do not require reservation. The room was huge with a lovely view of the river. The town is charming, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and they were very happy to have kids.

Thoughtful service, esp when travelling with young kids - they have a menu of baby-related items that could be requested, such as a bottle brush! Food was excellent and a good number of family baths that ensured availability.

Phenomenal stay at a wonderful Onsen Ryokan
The Yamabiko Ryokan is an amazing hotel and onsen. We had a phenomenal stay here, a night we will always remember. The service from the moment we arrived was first class and the onsen facilities absolutely fantastic. The breakfast experience also blew our socks off. We were so impressed that we really wanted to stay for a second night! As an aside, the opportunity to visit the neighbouring Onsen in Kurokawa on the day of our departure great. We cancelled our plans to go to Beppu for the day to stay and use the other facilities in the town. We have vowed to come back again very soon!

The hotel is far better than I think. The staff are very nice and polite. The traditional Japanese room is certainly a very nice try for non-Japanese. I have no complaints at all.

Good family vacation
Good service, clean room, excellent Onsen especially you have 6 private Onsen with different themes to choose with. Both breakfast and dinner is good, and they even allowed you to bring your own whisky to drink with dinner.
Good parking facilities. You need a car to travel around.
