Toilet flush dodgy. Bedlight not working. Sealant around the bath is black in places. The restaurant is very good with fery helpful staff. The food is excellent and with the cost of drinks is vety goid value for money. Despite the small drawbacks I would recommend thus hotel for a short stay.

No frills, cheap hotel within walking distance of the city center. A bit on the older side, but basic amenities are provided.

Disapointing French stay in Hotel Escatel,Macon Fr

Hotel was different as they do not have a receptionist after hours and you have to use a machine to check in. Was a little confusing and does not allow you to interact and or get questions answered if you arrive late. Night enterance could use more lighting for security and safety reasons. Lights in the stairs did not work but they had place a lamp to help until it could be fixed. Beds and pull-out beds were very comfortable, linen was nice along with towels. Breakfast in the morning was very fresh and plentiful. Place has tons of potential and during a busier time it looks like it would be great to stay at. Staff was very nice

Not quite as expected. Room was small but clean, as was the linen. Restaurant only open until 9pm and when we arrived at 8.30 there wasn't a great deal left as it was all being cleared away. When it came time to pay the Waiter blatantly tried to overcharge me by €40. We were a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 young children , he charged us for 3 adults and 1 child and also charged us the weekend buffet price which was an extra €10 per person (it wasn't a weekend). Luckily my schoolgirl French was good enough to notice and point it out - he didnt even try to apologise and I fear that he tries this trick with all unsuspecting English families. Not a hotel I would go back to or recommend to friends and family.

2/10 Poor

At first the reception person wasn't friendly but I didn't mind so much. What I think was terrible is that when I wanted to leave the hotel early, around 7am, I found a group of 50 or so people in the corridor. As I got to the corridor door o saw it was because the door out was locked!!! I've never been trapped inside a hotel my entire life and it's unpleasant. I used the telephone to call but most numbers were not working (there were no instructions whatsoever how to call or get out). I finally spoke to someone dialling 9 and this person told me in French without any sense of anything being amiss that I needed to leave by the night exit. I found that later but it was only signed in French and not clear to me at all how that would be an exit. I also saw no means on how to safely deposit the hotel key as that also required the reception to be open which it still wasn't at 7.15. Not a customer centric hotel in my experience

Staying here was a big mistake
A smelly hotel that is longer overdue for decorating, updating and cleaning. Staff were unhelpful and grumpy (didn't see any problems with the place - were they responsible?). Too far from the town to walk in - they said it was about 15 mins..... not many walk that fast! Some of the other hotel clients did not seem to be what one might expect in a tourist hotel. Quite expensive compared to hotels we have stayed in and most definitely very, very poor value for money.

Hostel.
This was more like a Hostel than a hotel. I booked it because I wanted to stay in a reasonable hotel, and this wasn't what I expected. The restaurant was more like a canteen.

2/10 Poor

Not a good stay
Not a good stay. Out of hours automatic check in is a complete joke. A key is dispensed with no instructions on how to get in, we had to knock until someone let us in. Hotel is a mixture of new fittings and tired. Room floor was filthy, everything reaked of cigarette smoke, door looked like someone had repaired it after being smashed in, very loud sawmill type noise outside after 23:00 at night (which we had to listen to because the windows had to be open for the smell of smoke), no bathroom/toilet lock, just a flimsy sliding door. Forget any ancillary's! No kettle, drinks, soap bar, etc. The cheap squeezy shower dispenser was horrible; I spent ages trying top get it off my skin. Air vent was non existent in the bathroom, meaning it was a complete sauna after a shower. Every air vent elsewhere in the hotel had the grills removed and filler/paint showed that this was not a temporary situation Anyone wanting to stay as a stopover off the motorway should know it will add a long time to your journey because it is far from convenient to get to. All in all it was one of the worst stays I've had in a hotel and I was very far from refreshed in the morning. I mean it when I say that I would by far have preferred to stay in a low budget motel like Formula 1.

Disppointing with no service provided.
A poor start to our stay where we arrived at 6pm on a Sunday to find the hotel shut! Apparently we were sent an email at 3.50pm to tell us that it was going to be shut and to use an automated system to check in and get the key. Unfortunately we did not get the email until we logged on at a Macdonalds to access emails with free wi-fi. We then returned to the hotel to check in on the machine which did not recognise our confirmation number but allowed us check in using our surname. A totally unreliable system, not to be trusted if something goes wrong . In the event of an emergency or illness or even being locked out there won't be anyone available to help. We were not altogether happy about leaving the car outside as it seemed quite remote with very few sign of life.

Not up to par
I was disappointed with this hotel. After being checked in by a surly receptionist I was put in a tired looking room that resembled what I could only describe as a very basic budget hostel. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned properly (think hair on certain surfaces etc), had cracked wall and floor tiles, the sealing was patchy and some surfaces were dusty. I had to complain as for the price, it wasn't worth it. I would stay elsewhere if I visited the town again.

Pleasant stay
Nice staff and very helpful. Having a swimming pool was a bonus. Slightly disappointed by the breakfast room and choice but I guess the hotel was quite full and the staff had to keep topping it up.

It was an experience I would not wish anybody should suffer. At 22.30 I got the hotel booking confirmation and 22.00 was the latest check in time.

No AC
OK hotel for the money, keep in mind for summer months though that no AC available. Also, not an easy hotel for those with luggage that can't be easily carried - no ramp, and a few set of stairs to get into hotel and past lobby as well.
Verified Hotels.com guest review

10/10 Exceptional

Clean, friendly, helpful, cheap.
Booked on hotels.com only 40 minutes before arriving after nine p.m.; staff was very nice in general and helped us find a knife from the restaurant to cut the cheese and bread we'd brought as well as opening our bottle of wine – more remarkable since this was not a kitchenette unit but a normal room. Absolutely clean room, great views (on our side of the building at least). '70s architecture "refreshed" with a kind of Ibis/EasyJet aesthetic, but very pleasant. Dull neighborhood, but on hill overlooking Macon and a kilometer from the center.
