A classic old hotel with all the charm and updates
Two years ago we stopped at the El Capitan for a meal and were impressed with the character of the place, in fact, so much so we decided to come back to spend a night during our winter travels this year. This is a wonderful old hotel which has been thoroughly updated but it still retains all of its original charm. Our supper in the dining room was excellent, the staff keen and knowledgeable and the room, although small was very comfortable. Overall we were very impressed with every aspect of our stay.

Unexpected nice hotel
This is the nicest building of any type in the surrounding area. It was a very nice facility. Enjoyed very much. The room was small but comfortable.

Fun Old Hotel
I have stayed at the El Capitan at least six or seven times. Only once have I been disappointed and that was of my own doing! It is quaint and different.

Great pit-stop en route to Austin
This was where I found much needed respite after driving east from Tucson. Great staff and good food at a very unlikely location.

Texas Treat
A wonderful hotel, the exterior and courtyard are a treat and the interior is, we thought, even better.Although the room seemed a little on the small side, that's really being picky, as we couldn't find anything to fault this place. We had read beforehand about the trains and their horns coming through town but that was hardly noticeable and, in any event, added to the atmosphere of the place.
Although there is prescious little else in Van Horn (the Van Horn Cattle Steak Restaurant was nice) it was worth staying there just to stay at this hotel.

Unexpected enjoyment in far west Texas
We arrived at the hotel rather late and did not get to enjoy the ambience of the lobby and bar/restaurant, which looked awesome. The retro quality of the place was very nice, but the room was quite comfortable in every modern way. I would stay here again for sure, but would want to spend time enjoying the onsite amenities.

Do not stay here
Do not stay in this hotel. The trains will keep you up all night. It is a very old building and the rooms are very small. The bathroom has a standing room for one. Find a different hotel.

Great hotel!
This historic hotel was a godsend after our drive from the Dallas area on our way to CA. After reading reviews about other hotels/motels in Van Horn, this was the only logical choice. We were not disappointed. It was worth every penny. The dining room was open until 10PM, and the bar until midnight (I highly recommend the cheese fries with green goddess dressing). The staff everywhere was very friendly. Noticing I was not feeling well, the waitress offered to bring me some hot tea. The room and bathroom were small, but extremely comfortable and spotless. On top of that, it is a beautiful building. It had everything you would need for an overnight stay. You could hear the trains, but if you read reviews about hotels in Van Horn, you are not going to escape this. It didn't bother us a bit, it's just a part of the town. The parking lot was full due to a party in the dining room, so the hotel clerk told us to just park out front in the 30 minute parking, we would be ok. "We're easy going here in Van Horn." There is a small gift shop that was still open at 9PM if you forgot some basic necessities. We will very likely stay here on our return to TX.

Don't Miss The "Hotel El Capitan"
We love the historic nature of the hotel. Sitting by the fireplace is awesome! The suites with the large balconies are the best for our family. I love the fine leather antique furniture in the lobby.
We had a great steak dinner in the dining room. We stay there every chance we can and always look for to the ambience of Hotel El Capitan when we travel across country. Anyone who hasn't been there is missing out!

Hotel with Character
Stayed at El Capitan as a stopover point during a long driving trip, and it served us well. Renovated place that has nice touches dating back through it's history as both a hotel and a bank, and the courtyard was especially pleasing. Room was small by modern standards, but adequate for the use & need. Clean & comfortable. Note that Van Horn has a busy Union Pacific rail line, and the trains DO have to toot-toot their warning as they go through the intersections - so all of the hotels/motels in town have to deal with this. I had no sleep disturbance, nor did my wife when she inserted the free ear plugs provided by the El Capitan. Nice touch!

Very nice historic hotel
Very nicely updated historic hotel in Van Horn, TX. It has a bar and restaurant, too, and the food was good. Continental breakfast was included with our stay & is served in the nice dining room. Friendly staff. Nice courtyard with fountain is a good place to relax, and as it faces North, has shade. A nice piece of West Texas history!

Great historic hotel
This was a beautifully restored hotel with much tile and southwestern design. Restaurant food was good and excellent service. Only real drawback is its location near the traintracks. Trains rumble through every 30-60 minutes 24 hrs a day. Bring earplugs.

Diamond in the Rough
Van Horn is an ideal point to stop in traveling from AZ to the East. Unfortunately, there isn't much there, but the people are very gracious and at Hotel El Capitan we found a "diamond". It is a beautiful hotel with a lot of history. It offers comfort not only in the rooms (which are small because of the age of the hotel), but the surroundings in the lobby, dining area & courtyard. The complimentary breakfast was excellent and the staff were helpful. Although it is higher in price the stay was definitely worth it.
