Thessaloniki Hotels

It may come second to Athens in terms of size, but few would argue against the idea that Thessaloniki is the Greek capital of culture, entertainment and style. Consistently selected as one of the world’s top party cities - walk the centre's streets at night to hear the thud of live music in the distance, the chinking of wine glasses in crammed bars, and the passionate applause of crowds in open-air theatres. You’ll quickly notice that most of the people you talk to here have visited this city several times - beware, once Thessaloniki gets under your skin, you’ll be counting the days until your next visit.

Things to see

The Heptapyrgion is this city’s crowning acropolis, and the Byzantine castle - bathed in gold at sunset - shines high above the city. Head up the hill to the former fortress and prison at night, to see its illuminated Ottoman inscriptions, and to look down over the city below - which twinkles like a constellations of stars. The next morning, slow the pace with a stroll around the streets of the city centre, before sitting for a sun-soaked coffee in Aristotelous Square. The sounds of the ocean’s waves wash over the square from one end, while the other hums with steaming espresso machines and friendly chatter from cafes and shops. Delight the kids, and make your own skin crawl, at the Insectopia museum. You’ve never seen so many insects, reptiles and amphibians, in one place - and you’ll leave having looked into the complex tunnels of ants’ nests, having watched snails the size of shoes sliding up glass walls, and having held beautiful electric-blue butterflies.

Hotels in Thessaloniki

Greece may be known for its history, but the ultra-modern, 5-star hotels in Thessaloniki let you stay in futuristic surroundings, featuring sharply-styled monochrome rooms, and huge televisions that discreetly slide away when not in use. Beautiful spas invite you to soak in the frothing bliss of gently mood-lit hot tubs, after sweating it out in saunas, or shedding the calories on treadmills. You’ll be amazed at how much you get for your money, as you check in and head straight to your balcony to admire views of the round battlements of the famous White Tower fortress, and the mythology shrouded Mount Olympus - which sits across the Thermaic Gulf. Soft beds, speedy WiFi, and huge rooftop pools - which appear to merge with the deep blue ocean below while you’re swimming - complete the package.

Where to stay

Breakfast on the balcony, before tasting the salty morning air on your tongue, while strolling along Thessaloniki’s quiet shoreside promenade. Night owls, meanwhile, might want to stay a little further inland towards the centre of the city, to enjoy lazy lie-ins followed by afternoon strolls in sunny parks like Platia Dikastirion. Afterwards, settle at a bar to fuel up for the night ahead with aniseed-flavoured ouzo drinks, and traditional skewers of succulent souvlaki meat. If you simply want to make the most of the hot Greek sun, then book a hotel near Neoi Epivates beach, and lay out your towel on the soft golden sand to work on your tan.

How to get to Thessaloniki

Arrive with ease thanks to Thessaloniki International Airport, which is roughly 10 miles from the city centre. Buses offer round the clock access, or you can reach your hotel in minutes using a local taxi. The KTEL bus network provides cross-country connections with Belgrade and Sofia, and the New Railway Station links Thessaloniki with Athens in as little as 4 hours.
