Room not what was booked, then double-charged card
Had a big anniversary coming up I booked a kingsize room here via hotels.com in late Jan 2023. When we arrived for our booking on the agreed date in Feb 2023 the guy at the desk said he couldn't find it, and asked for my Amex card. He tapped away and asked me to sign something - he did not tell me he was billing the card - despite us having already paid in full a month earlier via hotels.com. He gave me the room keys and we drove to the room to find a sorry looking room with 2 single beds, not the kingsize we'd booked. My wife was very upset with me. We got back in the car to get back to reception and as I was reversing into an area just to turn around a women came out shouting at us "you can't park there". I shouted back "I'm not parking! I'm turning around!". She just kept yelling. Not sure if she was staff or guest. She appeared to be quite drunk. At reception I dug out the email that showed my original booking for the kingsize and he said he had none available. I asked to cancel the booking and he said they'd just not bill it and it would drop off my statement. What I didn't realize is that they'd billed me again as I arrived - this one fell off but the original payment in Jan 2023 remained. I called Amex and they refunded it and I assume the hotel didn't contest it, as it's listed as resolved. We had to book another hotel immediately in Miami, that cost 100 bucks more and was not on the beach. So much for surprising my wife - she was surprised, but not in a good way.

On the plus side, I was able to make a last minute reservation at a fair price. This vintage property has a lovely pool area and is located right on the beach on beautiful Key Biscayne. On the downside, my room was one that has never been updated with old linens, furniture and everything else. My door faced a parking lot so there wasn’t much charm there. I believe some of the rooms have been renovated and there are some newer cottages on the property. I would just say that you should be aware that some of the standard rooms are pretty basic.
