2 time visitor, not relaxing either time

This is the second time we've stayed here. The location, aesthetics, and furniture are all great but each time we've been, the overall experience is not 100% due to noise. The first time, there was a holiday event on the roof for hours that played music SUPER loudly for approx 4 hours. It shook the walls and I could hear each 90s song like it was in the next room. It was awful! We wanted to stay in for a relaxing evening and it was anything but. Eventually I went down to the front desk to ask them what time the music would end and by that time the party was apparently ending, but it was a bummer. I also mentioned that it was disappointing to the person at the desk, but they didn't offer any kind of solution or perk or anything (we paid to extend our check out the next day, and given the circumstances that could have been an opportunity for them to do something to make up for it). This last time the mini fridge started getting so loud at night that we had to unplug it in the middle of the night just to get back to sleep. Had to throw out the food in the morning. None of these things are big deals in and of themselves but when paired together, it's pretty disappointing and not at all relaxing.

    Rude office staff

This was our second stay at The Box House hotel. Our first stay a couple years ago was excellent- we love the quirky decor and the large size of the rooms. What we didn’t like was the noisy heating system that made a very loud screeching noise every time it turned off, the top sheet that was dry rotted and had holes and rips and that wasn’t replaced after we requested it to be changed. The biggest issue though, and the reason we likely will not return, is the front desk staff- other than Caitlin ( forgive the misspelling if I erred) the staff is unprofessional and the manager not very personable or professional either when a front desk staff acted like a high school child and rolled her eyes repeatedly and told me I was rude for “screaming “ when I loudly said our room number upon check out after she couldn’t hear me three times in a row. What a way to end our stay! There are so many options for places to stay and we’ll stay elsewhere on our next NYC visit.

    Know before you go

I get that this hotel is going for the quirky vibe and it is a vintage boutique-style property. However, these themes are at the sacrifice of comfort and amenities and certainly not in keeping with its 9.2 rating. The location has a very residential feel meaning fine dining and shopping is not available within walking distance. There is not a doorman, concierge or room-vault/safe, so if you prefer those conveniences, this is not your place. While the rooms appear large because there is a kitchen and "seating" area, the sleeping accommodations are sacrificed. The main bed can only sleep one adult comfortably. So you must utilize the pull-out bed (which was not made-up) if there are 2 or more persons which means the room is difficult to navigate. The bathroom is small and equipped with a pedestal sink in definite need of a redesign and update. The rooms are extremely noisy so much so that ear-plugs are available. The bed linens and toilet paper are unacceptable. It may see insignificant but the single-ply was rough like sandpaper and disintegrated like cottoncandy. The front desk staff was not attentive or helpful. Check-in was delayed so much so that we had only 15 minutes to get ready before our function. But the most unsettling aspect of our stay was that a stranger who was staying in an unknown room down the hall from us opened the door to OUR room with HER room key.

    Boutique and wonderful as advertised

The hotel is fabulous! The staff was friendly. The room was truly as advertised. Boutique fabulous. Clean and comfortable. I only had two very minor qualms. Restaurant was closed because it was a holiday weekend. As an out of towner , if you are looking for just some general walking “to-dos” and cool finds, it’s probably not the best location. It’s not bad.. the neighborhood is fine. But there is only a few coffee shops and a brewery in walking distance. Lots of curb/Uber rides. Again- minor from my standpoint because the hotel is top notch.

Happy yet disappointed about a couple of things.

Disappointed that the restaurant was closed and had to go outside for everything. Disappointed car service was no longer available. These are 2 things we always enjoyed during our previous stays at the Box house. Otherwise, the stay was good. The room was comfortable and the service was great.

Had to check in late. Got to the room and found 2 bottles of complimentary water in refrigerator. 1 bottle was open and half filled . I called the front desk and was told they could not do anything about it. For $260 per night I should have been brought up an unopened bottle. It’s not the water but the unfortunate attitude snd lack of service. I mentioned it again this am and was never offered a bottle.. just little things like that are very frinstrating show poor quality control. Can I assume all the sheets and towels are clean??? Very frustrating.
