Fabulous but needs more attention to detail

Have stayed here twice before. A marked difference from previous visits. Staff exceptionally nice and friendly but under-trained. Room was still not serviced at 4pm on last day but was immediate attended to when reported. Two dinners booked there. First one had a marked lack of attention to detail. Items missing off plate, the 'steak and kidney suet pudding' had one piece of kidney some dry, tough beef, not eniugh gravy and over thick suet pastry. I did point it out to the maitre d' as I could not eat it and he immediately took it off my bill. The second meal and all breakfasts were beautiful. None of the above comments would stop me returning to this fabulous hotel. Just needs a few tweaks with staff and chefs.

Lovely overnight trip, splendid venue. Room overlooked courtyard car park which normally wouldn’t be an issue, however there was a wedding on that day and some guests were noisy as they left. Breakfast was lovey, good selection to order Super close to Emirates Riverside Stadium for cricket and approx £5 taxi fare to station / town

      Ridiculous

Not happy when we got there they said that our room was not ready, when I had rang up before hand and ask and they said it would be ready for us at 3 then I was told that we would get an upgrade which we didn’t. Sorry but there’s no excuse for what happened and the price I paid for the room.

      Beautiful castle, lovely stay.

Stayed two nights at the hotel, the room was small but cosy, in converted stables. The hotel was well maintained and the staff were very friendly. Had breakfast both mornings we were there, first day was a better experience as we were in the main breakfast area. The second day we were in a small offshoot room and service was very slow, this was a small detail, which did not detract from our lovely visit.

Lovely castle but noisy at times

I stayed here as it was close to Durham cricket ground at Chester le Street. It is a fair walk from the town so if you do not have a car I would recommend a taxi from the town or there is a bus that stops at the end of the nearby golf club bridge at the end of the hotel drive. I stayed in a courtyard room which was not ready at the stated time but it was well appointed and comfortable. Like most large hotels this one has many functions and there were two wedding parties during my brief stay. The first night there were some noisy guests returning to their rooms and somebody decided to knock on my door despite the "do not disturb" sign. The second night was better after the noisy plumbing in an adjacent room had settled down. Perhaps the plumbing needs repair and/or the walls are not thick. The best part of my stay was the well prepared breakfast with pleasant and efficient service.

Stunning, fabulous food and serving team,

Incredible castle, excellent food and bar and breakfasts staff wonderful.reception staff really let the place down with the exception of the guy who booked us in . We had asked in advance of arriving about about eating options as we would be eating at 9 and their restaurant was closed, we were told room service was available yet when we asked at 9.00pm at reception were all but ignored by man at desk, he grudgingly said room service was available till 9.30 and disappeared to get a menu and never returned. Hungry and a bit bemused a lovely bar server arranged sandwiches although she thought room service ended at 9.00. Check out was also unnecessarily complex as despite pre authorizing our credit card there is no key drop. The castle itself is stunning, the room we had was large, comfy, and the grounds are lovely with Incredible flowers !

Refund Required As there was no room Available.

Could not be more frustrated with this booking. I turned up at around 10pm after working all day in Gateshead. When I arrived at the reception I was informed that there was no room as there was an error with the system. I got back in my car and found a hotel in Sunderland. My booking was paid In full and trying to get a refund is turning out to be a nightmare. I have contacted the hotels reception on about 10 occasions. I leave my details I never get a call back. hotels.com have contacted the hotel who have said I stayed when I didn’t. When I have evidence that I didn’t stay in the hotel that night. The whole set up Is a joke and I need a refund as soon as possible. They have literally robbed me of £125.
