Noise from all sides.
Room 206 was directly over the bar which was loud and since our room was hot and stuffy - and not because of the weather - we had to open a window to air it out a bit. Thank goodness we had flown in that morning and were exhausted from not sleeping on the overnight flight or sleep would have been impossible. Until at 3:15am, when the fire alarm went off. Then stopped. Then went off again. 5 times. The person at the front desk just said well you can see there is no fire. What? Not all fires are obvious. There was no attempt to make up for the issue at checkout. “Just email feedback@. And since our room wasn’t the £39 hostel rate but almost $200, it’s harder to overlook the issues. Always ask for a room with an odd # if you don’t want to hear the revelry all night long. And hope there aren’t any fire alarm issues.

10/10 Exceptional

It was amazing. The place was clean, beautiful and had everything a backpacker could ask for. The staff was friendly at A&O hostel, making the experience complete.

2/10 Poor

Not disabled friendly
Arrived at 3 am on Sunday 8 th of May 2022 and my flight was 3 hours late from Crete and had a job getting into the building as there was no buzzer and had to attract a security night guard to get into the building where the hostel is situated. I was sent an email stating that a lower bunk was reserved for me and when I got to room 108 bunk 7 had been taken by a fit young man . I was forced with back trouble and arthritis to climb to a top bunk numbered 10 which isn’t a good idea if your disabled. Only stayed 4 hours and hurt my back getting out of bunk 10 and had to jump 2 feet getting out of it . This hostel was formerly run by safe stay who did a much better job than A&O hostel in Edinburgh does. Paid for somewhere that was friendly for disabled people to sleep and didn’t get what I paid for by a selfish person. So promised a place to sleep that a disabled person and wasn’t given it as promised by email . Friendly staff but promises were not kept and I left the hostel with an injured back and very little sleep and pains in my legs . Could do much better .

Quick overnight stay.
It started going wrong when the receptionist was more interested in taking a personal call which meant I stood for almost 10mins before being checked in, she did apologise. Charged extra for bed linen was a shock ! Room was unclean, yet they moved me quickly to another one. Only two lockers for a 4 bed dorm? Luckily only two of us were there. No power points or lights at the bed. I respect it was a Friday night, our window overlooked the courtyard which in turn was where the bar was. Even with the window closed, it was pretty noisy right up til 0130, not helped by being on the 1st floor. I did get a comfortable sleep eventually and the room stayed at a reasonable temperature all night. Didn’t have breakfast, shower facilities adequate, yet a bit of detail into cleaning wouldn’t go amiss. I’d hesitate to stay here again. Stayed in much better places in Edinburgh for cheaper prices, and they don’t have added extras that are thrown at you on check in!
