There is a sign at reception saying that temperature checking was required prior to check in, but I was checked in without it. I didn't go exploring, but the section of the hotel I stayed in was very tired and in need of redecoration. The room was clean, the bed comfy enough, just run down. The breakfast however, was another matter. Had I realised it was going to be served in polystyrene tray, not even at a proper table, I wouldn't have bothered, I would have found a cafeteria. No toast, cereal or fruit options and certainly not worth the £9 it cost. I know things are difficult with Covid-19, but other places I've stayed have made a far better job of serving food whilst distancing. Wi-Fi reception was also very poor, dropping in and out.
Fine comfortable room nice and clean
Nice property but little point paying for leisure facilities if only staying for 1 night as impossible to get any space. Breakfast is very poor considering what others are able to do.
I do not understand the reasons for so many negative reviews !! The building ( old letchworth hall) is beautiful !! You can see it needs tlc but that’s true of so many stately homes !! The rooms were very clean, beds reasonably comfortable. The surrounding is very peaceful. Staff at the reception were pleasant. For the rice we paid, can’t fault it. Definitely recommended.
The hotel needs a total refurb. Skeleton staff due to Covid 19, but they where very good and helpful sorting out problems. Unfortunately there was a number of problems with the room. Room was very dusty and the carpet doesn't fit well and causes a trip hazard. Furniture very dated and stained. Bathroom extractor fan doesn't work and the bathroom smells of damp. Heated towel rail, doesn't work, illuminated mirror, doesn't work. The shower head rail is practically falling off the wall. Peeling paint and mould on bathroom ceiling. And this was one of their "Superior" rooms. Not a pleasant experience.
On arrival the hotel is positioned well, in a quiet location. Although we expected it to be a different experience, for our 4 night stay, knowing that there was no room service, we were given a small plastic bag containing 2 teabags , 4 coffee sachets ,a bar of soap, shampoo and a body lotion. The room was small for a 4* hotel. we asked to be moved as the bathroom ceiling was covered in mold. 1bath towel , 1 hand towel, and the TV cracked on all channels but BBC and ITV1. Obviously because of Covid it was on reduced staff. Over our stay I counted 4 young people and the so called chef. Having paid for breakfast we had to give a time. It arrived in a polystyrene box A sausage small portion of scrambled egg, a tomato , bacon and potato. Plastic knife and fork which broke when used On the Monday the full English consisted of a choice , either a bacon bap or a sausage bap with 3 halves of a small sausage , and only paper cups available. At no time was the food hot !! Probably good that the restaurant was closed !! The young people did their best.
Where do I start.i have the reviews the benefit of the doubt. It really is as dated as everyone says it is. I don't know how it's 4 star there was paint peeling from the walls, the carpet had lumps in it. We was on the ground floor facing the carpark, yep they are single glasses windows. So we heard everything. My grandparents had there bed for 15 odd years before they passed away, it was not as lumpy as this one. The pillows where barely bigger the a TV remote control. The TV remote was really dirty, in the age of covid I expected that to be clean. The plug in our bath got stuck so we couldn't empty the water, we couldn't get anyone to fix it due to covid. It wasn't untill we paid we was told we only had use of the room. So that's the usual hotel room price with none of the extras. I would have expected a hotel that was spotless due to covid-19, it just had a grubby feel to it.
It was pleasant. Social distance observed . Mercure need to invest in window cleaners And instruct your cleaners to always clean curtains . Everywhere was clean apart from the curtain & windows of all the rooms we occupied . It was a nice stay
They’ve over done the covid thing, wearing masks indoors when there is no one about, skeleton staff, no bar or restaurant, rubbish breakfast in a bag. Won’t be staying again
I have stayed at this hotel a vast number of times over the years and I am sorry to say that it has steadily grown more and more tired looking with the recent covid impact seeming to finish it off for me. 4* still on the door however it struggles to get a 3 from me on this occasion due to the tiredness of the rooms.
