Not up to our expectations
Lovely location and a great hotel, clearly with a fine history. But it is worn and tired. The bathroom floor tiles are cracked and the toilet flush system stuck and I just prevented a serious flood when I heard the water lapping during the night. The staff, many of whom do not seem to have a good grasp of the English language, were not especially customer focused. The furniture was worn and well past its best. Shame because it could be so good but seems long overdue for a complete refurbishment. We were there for the night only - it was warm and the bed was comfortable but we left early the next morning and went a few doors up the road for a Wetherspoons breakfast at a bargain price. Having expected a quality hotel and a taste of luxury we were not impressed.

Great location, could to with some love though!
A great location and a very quirky hotel. It could definitely do with an uplift as the decor is a little old and shabby but there were 7 of us staying and we felt it had a good atmosphere. Nice breakfast too

Wanted me to pay twice
When checking in the receptionist wanted us to pay for the room again. I explained that I had already paid. Showed email from Hotel. Com saying I had paid and my bank statement showing the money had come out. He said the hotel hadn't received the money from Expedia so it wasn't his problem and we should ring Expedia. 10 mins later of us all going round in circles, as we had already received the key we just went to the room with our stuff. Worried the rest of the night we were going to get a knock on the door turfing us out. In the morning I dropped the key off and got a 'it's all sorted'. No apology.

Character driven hotel, charming location
The Red Lion was a lovely place to stay. There was lots of age and character to the building and much of the furniture too. Excellent quality bed linen. The information as to where and when breakfast was served was on the back of the door, as I was too exhausted to realise I wasn't told this at check in. The breakfast had a reasonable choice and was of excellent ingredients. I would gladly return to stay here if I was in the area, which I feel is a good mark on how you enjoyed the stay.

Charming in a shabby/chic sort of way
We stayed at the Red Lion for two nights for a reunion with two other couples. The positives: The location was perfect for getting about in Henley. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was full of old world charm. The room was clean, quiet and spacious. Good breakfast. Good free wifi. The negatives: The plumbing leaves a lot to be desired - the water was hot but the water pressure low which made showering a challenge. The room furniture was old and a bit decrepit in a shabby/chic sort of way. I didn't realise they still made TV sets so small! On the first morning the breakfast room was freezing as the heating was not working. We asked for a small portable heater but were told that none were available. Heating was OK by second day.

Great location but average accommodation
This hotel has a fantastic location and lovely river views but is in need of some investment- the bathrooms are rather tired with Lino flooring and the taps and shower controls have lost any shine they once has so it just doesn't feel very clean. The room was adequate but had a small TVs , a custard cream as the complimentary biscuit to go with the tea making facilities, so hardly making the place feel special. The carpet had little or no underlay and so again just reflects a lack of investment. This hotel could be so much more and sadly the room rates do not reflect the average standard of the room. the staff were lovely though !
