Great hotel but be aware of the area
Loved this hotel. History, cool decor, staff were great, cleanliness. It's just marked down because the area it is in is really not great for tourists.

Exceptional 10.0
the hotel was great, the staff very helpful with directions etc.,however there are a couple of areas of concern.First of all the restaurant was a pretty high class establishment not very suitable for families, mostly drinks and high end fair.I feel the on site restrant should be a bit more family friendly. And the only other problem was the neighborhood, with parking at a premium in the area, it is recommended by the office that you leave your vehicle parked andwalk to where you're going add walk to where you're going or use uber.while walking is fun, be sure you check with the office before leaving ,to get directions as to which direction to go in as it is very important for your safety. All this being said ,I really enjoyed our stay and will stay again for sure.

The Phoenix is always our first choice!
Had another awesome stay at the Phoenix Hotel last Friday - as usual! We were in town for CRB at the Filmore and the Phoenix was full of people going to either that show or the Mother Hips show at the Great American. It's always that way at the Phoenix, lot's of cool people staying at the coolest hotel in SF! The staff is chill and easy and this time we noticed that the rooms had been upgraded with new bed frames and comfy mattresses, new carpet, updated bathrooms, etc. Nothing fancy, just a really groovy, comfortable, 70's style hotel with a modern hip vibe. We've never been disturbed by people partying or inappropriate behavior within the hotel pool/courtyard setting. The rooms are quiet and everyone just seems to respect the rules and other guests' comfort. We were a little bummed that Chambers Restaurant was closed for a party the night we stayed but, we were made aware oƒ that prior to our arrival. It's in the Tenderloin so you have to be aware of your surroundings and move through there with no fear. We've never had a problem even when coming back late at night. The guarded, free parking is a big perk for us. The sidewalk on the Larkin side of the parking lot was heavy with sketchy people the last time we were there but, has been cleaned up significantly since then! Every once in awhile we have our kids with us and they love it too! I wouldn't necessarily say its a family hotel but, it is safe and the pool is awesome! The Phoenix is always our first choice when in SF!
