Not a hotel for families
This was the last leg of our family's California coastal vacation. We stayed five nights renting two studio suites. The hotel's location is very good as its minutes away by foot to Union square. The rooms were good in terms of space but were far short on infrastructure and service to justify the price. The elevator is an antique, 1910 drum and rope mechanically controlled very rare in SF so the hotel feels obliged to keep it. Unfortunately, it fails more than 1 out of ten trips. For us, that meant my elderly mother was stuck on the elevator more than once. Similarly, the wifi did not work most of the times in our rooms, 811 and 814, so I recommend to avoid those, and finally the hotel does not have A/C which makes it uncomfortable in August. The service from the staff was substandard to say the least. We waited no less than 30 minutes for ice deliveries, hot water, and for maintenance to show up. Overall, this is not a bad property for couples or singles but not appropriate for families.

Great room. Dark Hallways.
I enjoyed this hotel and would stay there again. I was in SF for a conference and found this hotel was within walking distance to everywhere I needed to be. I walked everywhere I went, and caught a trolley once or twice. It's a long and hilly walk to Fisherman's Wharf area, but doable if you're feeling adventurous. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The room was small but had everything I needed. I liked that it didn't look or feel like a typical hotel room. It was nice to grab a cookie coming back to my room at the end of a long day, too! The only thing I did not like about the hotel were the dark hallways. They were dark day or night and that made me feel a bit uncomfortable. The elevator is small, old, and slow. I used it, but the hotel is small enough I used the stairs quite a bit, too (I was on the 7th floor).

Vintage, chic hotel in the Financial District
Vintage, chic boutique hotel in the Financial District situated within walking distance to transportation, shopping, Chinatown and North Beach. Self-Park available around the corner. Trendy bar and restaurant with live music on the second floor. Bed was comfortable. Elevator has landmark historical status. Eight floors.
