Presteigne surprise

We were delighted by the old-fashioned charm of this hotel, which has surely survived despite all the odds in the current financial climate. We booked a 'superior' double room which turned out to be enormous, the only setback being that it was up 2 flights of stairs and the second of these had very narrow steps. However the room was lovely and so was the bathroom (which had a jacuzzi!) All was nice and clean. On one evening they had a carvery which was very popular and deservedly so. Breakfasts were 'continental' style, but plenty of choice. The bar is an old-fashioned gem.

Very friendly, welcoming, helpful staff throughout makes for a lovely homely atmosphere. Rooms are comfortable with modern bathrooms. The quality of food, excellently prepared for dinner and at a great price makes a vist to the restaurant well worth a visit.

Toilet regulations

Through my fifty year career I stayed in hundreds of hotels at home and abroad and almost never encountered this issue: The toilet bowl in the bathroom of Room 10 is at least six inches too high off the floor. This is not conducive to correct posture when performing! I had thought that there were building standards/regulations covering this.

Dated

The room was a bit dated. When I booked the hotel I requested that I didn’t get an accessibility room with a wet room. This is exactly what I got. I did mention it at reception to be told that Hotels.com book certain rooms and they can’t change anything. I stay in hotels all the time and never had this. No option of cooked breakfast either.

Loved this hotel. Room was spacious. Lovely friendly staff and nothing was any trouble. Food very nice and a selection of drinks the continental breakfast was just right for up. Would definitely visit again.

We found all the staff very friendly and helpful, and our room was very comfortable. There is an excellent choice of food for dinner in the evening, breakfast was first class, and the lunchtime menu was very good. All in all, a lovely stay. We will be returning again in the future.

Stopping I. Presteigne

This was an old building full of character but spotlessly clean. It doesn’t have a lift and the stairs are quite steep to the second floor but there are chalet-type rooms at the back for those who cannot manage stairs. The hosts were very friendly and the carvery was excellent. We would visit again if in the area. The town was very quiet and the surrounding area very picturesque. A good place to stay to go to The Royal Welsh Show - about a 40 minute drive away.

Mixed experience

The garden rooms are sited up some steps from the main hotel and the car park up further steps still. I had thought this was level access so this came as quite a shock. The bathroom floor was uneven with lumps and dents in it and the room very dark which meant we had to be extra careful. Other than this the room was nice and the beds very comfortable. Breakfast was basic and was made up of prepacked pastries, cereal, ham and cheese, yoghurt and fruit. There was no bread other than toast for the ham and cheese. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome. The house is beautiful with lots of history however the site looked unkempt in parts which was a shame.
2-night trip

2/10 Poor

Extortionate.

Having paid £130 for a room on a Sunday evening, we were very disappointed to receive an email stating the bar and restaurant closed at 6pm, therefore we would have to go off the premises to have dinner. The room was non refundable. The manager did offer to let us cancel but having booked through Expedia it was still non refundable. We also had family in the same situation in another room . The rooms are adequate and well equipped but the bed mattresses dreadfully uncomfortable and in both rooms squeaked and groaned with every movement…hence a terrible nights sleep. Most hosteleries that do not have facilities open reduce their price on those nights. With a disabled, 88 year old husband there is no way I would have booked, knowing we could not eat or drink on the premises . I think the charge of £130 was extortionate. The area from the chalets to the main building is a tip . It would only take a short time to clear the discarded furniture and general rubbish. For information… only continental breakfast of processed meats and one processed cheese are available. No rolls or bread, just toast.

Francisco, 2-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

The rooms were immaculate and even had a a book in there explaining the history behind the building which was really interesting. The food was amazing and the portion sizes were great all for good pricing. The area is very quiet but there’s plenty of places to go that’s within walking distance or 5-10 minutes in the car but it truly is set out as the Victorian/Tudor era. The staff were so attentive and friendly. Overall amazing stay and would definitely come again!
Kyrra, 1-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

Nice old historic building with the quirks of charms to go with it. The beds were very comfortable and the room had fans to help with the heat of the summer. Classic style pub attached to the property and a decent sized pub garden to go with it. Staff were very helpful and friendly throughout. I think this was the stand out part of the stay. Had the carvery on one of the night there and have to say it was superb. Would definitely consider stay here if in the area, or going to the Royal Welsh Show again.

Anbefales på drt sterkeste

Super service. Vi kom sent og de ga oss en bungalow i hagen så vi slapp å bære bagasje til 2 etg. Kjempefint og stort rom, nydelig bad og et skikkelig te-kjøkken. Strålende frokost og hyggelig atmosfære.

The room was comfortable, but unfortunately there was no hot water during our stay, so none of us could take a proper shower. I reported this at checkout and followed up by email, but received no response.
