Things to see

Tromso is beautiful throughout the year, but at Christmas the polar night plunges the city into darkness, rendering it a veritable fairyland with its profusion of Christmas lights, perfect for dancing the night away in the main square of Stortorget or perusing the exquisite Christmas markets. You can experience Sami life by taking a dog sled trip or watch reindeer racing through the powdery snow. Don't miss watching the fjords for majestic whales from late autumn to mid-winter. Riding the cable car up Mount Storsteinen will give you jaw-dropping views of the nearby mountains and bright blue fjords, while the Polar Museum spins riveting tales of Arctic hunters and daring polar explorers. During warmer weather you can investigate rock carvings at Tennes that were etched by fishermen and hunters over 4,000 years ago, then return to the city for classic Norwegian fare such as reindeer steaks and bacalao – dried salt cod.
