Cheap Areas to Stay in Amsterdam

With millions of tourists arriving every year in Amsterdam, it's only natural to find that there's an extremely wide array of accommodations in the Dutch capital to suit every budget. There are plenty of hotels all over the city where a good, cheap room can be had for well below €100 a night. A good concentration can be found in the Oude Centrum, Amsterdam's historical city centre and home to some of the most interesting attractions. The tree-lined streets of Amsterdam West hold some good budget-friendly options alongside lively coffee shops and great shopping. De Pijp, Amsterdam's bohemian Latin Quarter, likewise has its share of inexpensive lodging choices.

Cheap Hotels in Amsterdam

The MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam City West is a large, reasonably priced hotel that offers great value for money. It features spacious and comfortable guestrooms with blackout drapes, a colourful bar/lounge, a games room and a cheerful play area for children. The hotel also allows pets for an extra charge. Close by is the CityHub Amsterdam, which features snug pod-like rooms with mood lighting, a chic minimalist bar and a comfortable lounge where you can mingle with other guests. The quirky Flying Pig Uptown Hostel is another budget-friendly option. Located in the Museum Quarter, it offers private and shared rooms, free breakfast and Wi-Fi, and a cosy bar.

Where to find cheap food in Amsterdam

Amsterdam offers plenty in the way of fine dining, but there are also numerous places to eat on the cheap. Amsterdam West is chock-full of eateries where you can grab everything from tasty pizza to piquant broodje haring (raw herring sandwich), while over on streets of the Red Light District you can munch your way through eateries featuring all-burger dinners, chicken wraps and Asian-inspired croquettes. The De Pijp neighbourhood south of the city centre is another place teeming with inexpensive local and international fare – warm and tasty stroopwafels, large servings of hummus and flavourful tacos.

Cheap Things to do in Amsterdam

You can take a closer look at Amsterdam's attractions at little to no cost, and one way to do this is to book a spot on a free walking tour. These tours take about 2 to 3 hours and are led by volunteer guides who are passionate about sharing their city's history and culture (so don't forget to leave a tip). Tour highlights usually include the 800-year-old Oude Kerk parish building and the Homomonument memorial dedicated to gays and lesbians executed by the Nazis. The centuries-old Canal Ring area is replete with sights that you can take in for free – iconic gabled houses, Instagram-worthy bridges and the Catboat, a floating sanctuary for stray and abandoned cats. Amsterdam's street markets are also places where a few euros go a long way; get a bouquet of tulips at the Bloemenmarkt flower market on the Singel canal or browse for souvenirs at the Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp.

Cheap Ways to Get Around Amsterdam

Amsterdam is an eminently walkable city, and exploring its historical and cultural highlights on foot is a multisensory adventure. Cycling is another popular way to get around; you can rent a bike from the many bike hire operators in the city. Amsterdam has a wide and efficient public transport system, and a great way to save money is to buy a public transport chip card. This will allow you unlimited use of the system's buses, trams and metro trains while the card is valid. Free rides are also available on GVB ferries across the River IJ to Amsterdam Noord, IJplein and the NDSM Wharf.
