Riga Hotels

With a third of the population living on its pretty cobbled streets, Riga is undoubtedly the beating heart of Latvia. Whether it's the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site listed Medieval City – containing the church of Saint Maria's upside down ice cream cone spire – or the bustling market that's held in pavilions recycled from German Zeppelin bunkers, the 2014 European City of Culture is packed with history and intrigue. Riga isn't afraid to look forwards either, and the modernist library - that rears up next to the river like a metal fin - is a testament to the city's willingness to innovate.

Things to see

Practically every building, balcony and bridge in Riga is decorated with intricate figures and hand sculpted faces. The Musee Art Nouveau celebrates the fact that Riga is home to the world’s largest collection of Art Nouveau buildings, and lets you walk through an authentic home from the period, which is filled with spiral staircases and swirling wall art. After a gentle stroll around the museum, get your heart racing at the unique Psaiho house of horrors. Even the hardiest of souls will feel a chill creeping down their spines, as they tread warily through thick smoke, which cloaks shadowy movements and eerie groans. The interactive theatre event lets you take charge of your own nightmare, as actors improvise around your movements and aim to give you the fright of your life. You'll still be feeling jumpy as you head to the attractive Town Hall Square's attractive coloured facades, to sit and listen to cheery buskers. Keep an eye out for an unassuming metal disk on the ground - that's the birthplace of the decorated Christmas tree, with the first having been erected on that spot in 1510, by the Brotherhood of Blackheads.

Hotels in Riga

Whether it's a minimalist hostel offering a roof for the night, or a historical building that oozes with character and 5-star luxury, Riga has hotels for every need. Succumb to sensuous massages in boutique spas, or stock up your wallet and hope that lady luck is on your side, while staying in lively casino hotels in Riga. Heated indoor pools let you swim in comfort whatever the weather, and you'll always find time to try a traditional Riga Black Balsam in the hotel bar. While it's true that locals often use the bitter liqueur to treat colds, your head definitely won't thank you if you have one too many. Practically all of the hotels in Riga offer rooms with WiFi, a flat-screen television, and a cosy bed.

Where to stay

Stay in the enchanting Old Town to sip steaming coffee on fresh summer mornings, or to watch as the tangerine-orange sun sets over the iced Daugava River during the bone-shuddering winter. If you can face the cold, you'll find the city’s cobbled streets and pretty spires take on an added romance after being lightly dusted with snow. Warm up by popping into a bakery for a traditional, mouthwatering Pīrādziņi pastry, filled with bacon cubes. The city centre's hotels make it easy to enjoy a meal before taking your seat at the elegant National Opera Theatre. Feel the hairs on your neck rising as performers hit the top of their registers, and your rib cage begins to rattle.

How to get to Riga

Riga International Airport takes hundreds of flights per day, connecting the city to virtually anywhere in the world. If you’re hailing from Stockholm, take the daily ferry across the Baltic Sea to arrive in style. International trains offer a safe, reliable, and wallet-friendly way to reach Riga from cities in Estonia, Russia and Belarus, while border-hopping buses offer another simple option.
