Walk the length of the Shuri Castle walls and admire the far-reaching sea views from this isolated inland location. Stroll beneath the towering red hip roof of the Shureimon gate, as it stands strong and proud as an emblem of local tradition. Enjoy a leisurely walk around the edge of Lake Man, a wetland area rich with native marine and avian life, from where inspiring views of the cityscape can be enjoyed. There’s a lot crammed into this multi-cultural city, perched as it is on the very edge of this Japanese island.

The mile long stretch of International Street, known as Kokusai Dori in local tongue, trails through the heart of the city in a colorful stream of souvenir outlets, Japanese fast food eateries, and modern cafes. Pottery shops, and clothing stores line up single-file, and when night falls, the hectic streets become even livelier with late night art gallery openings, and blaring music from nightclub doors. The Himeyuri Peace Museum is ideally located in tranquil, landscaped grounds, shielded from the sun by leafy trees. Inside, its exhibits are about war and survival, with displays dedicated to warning about the horrors of war. Over at the DFS Galleria Okinawa, the attractions are of a more cheerful nature. This luxury travel and shopping destination boasts a fabulous collection of designer outlets, from fashion to beauty, and designer watches and jewelry. It’s the ultimate retail mecca for tourists before it’s time to head home.

Hotels in Naha

The cosmopolitan streets of Naha are filled with high end accommodation and welcoming discount hotels, all perfectly located for exploring this vibrant city and its exciting attractions. Most hotels in Naha can be found in the center, close to the multi-cultural shopping street of Kokusai Dori, or in the colorful, cramped streets of the Matsuyama district. The more you’re willing to spend, the higher your view can be, since luxury hotels in Naha are typically housed in high-rise structures. You can enjoy the comforts of flat screen televisions, excellent floor space, and wonderful vistas towards the glittering waters of the East China Sea. If you’re traveling on a budget, lower priced hotels still offer convenient locations, but usually have smaller room sizes. Although with so much going on in this city, you might not be spending too much time indoors.

Where to stay

Hugging the south west coast of Okinawa Island, Naga is a large, built-up metropolis that edges glittering waters. It’s a labyrinth of modern developments, ancient historical sites, and shiny marinas. Towering shopping malls dominate crowded inner city streets, beckoning visitors inside with their enticing displays and twinkling windows, while traditional public markets, with their covered arcades, and garish stalls vie for their share of the trade. It’s colorful, and bright, and around every street corner are welcoming hotels in Naha, urban cafes, and pretty public parks.

How to get to Naha

Getting to Naha means flying to Naha Airport, but there are few international carriers accepted here. Most flights from abroad connect on the mainland. From the airport, the futuristic above ground Okinawa monorail transports passengers to the heart of the city, offering a bird’s eye view of the metropolitan area on the way. It’s easier to get around on foot once you arrive here, spending your time discovering the illicit side streets, and tempting local bars on a stroll around the city, but there is a good public transport system to take you to other parts of the island.
