Sapporo Hotels

This northern Japanese city is famed for snow, beer, and ramen, with festivals to celebrate each throughout the year. It is a city built on clean, modern lines, with Odori Park, a version of New York’s Central Park, cutting a green band through the center. Surrounded by mountains, Sapporo offers numerous ski resorts, popular with locals in winter, while its gardens and parks provide tranquil spaces in the summer. In the bustling city streets, there’s plenty of entertainment and shopping.

Sapporo has a multitude of viewpoints from where you can take in the glittering lights of the city: ascend to the JR Tower Observatory in the center, or take a cable car to the top of Mount Okura. The viewing platform offers panoramic city views, while on the mountain itself, you can watch skiers taking on the Olympic ski jump. Discover more at the nearby Winter Sports Museum, where you can attempt the ski jump on a simulator. To explore Japan’s past, take a trip to the Historical Village, where you’ll see traditional houses and even a sleigh-building factory. Visit Odori Park, the main location for the Snow Festival in February, with the incredible snow sculptures, and the center of the action for the ramen and beer festival. For evening entertainment, head to Susukino, a district which comes to life at night, with neon lights, ramen joints and trendy clubs.

Hotels in Sapporo

With its full annual roster of festivals and big winter ski season, Sapporo has a vast and eclectic hotel collection spread across its popular districts. The city also offers great hotel deals in comparison with other Japanese cities, meaning that you can stay in 4-star luxury for a fraction of the price elsewhere, and inclusive spa facilities are common in the upmarket hotels. If you’re on a tight budget, or are taken by the idea of sleeping in something which looks like a cross between an industrial dryer and a space shuttle, try one of the city center capsule hotels.

Where to stay

Most visitors stay in Sapporo hotels located around the Odori Park. There are plenty of places to stay, both luxury hotels and budget options, and it’s here that many of the sights and museums can be found. If you’re planning to party, stay in Susukino. By night, you can wander from packed ramen alley to thumping club under neon lights. Cheap hotels are easy to come by, and it’s easy to get around the rest of the city from here. For ski breaks or hiking trips, head to Jozankei, a mountain ski resort. It offers adventure, tranquility, and luxury spa hotels.

How to get to Sapporo

Flights to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport are mostly by way of Tokyo, where international travelers will need to transfer. The Tokyo to Sapporo route is one of the busiest in the world, and cheap tickets are readily available, making it a much faster and better value option than taking the train. From the station, the easiest way to get to the city center is by train to Sapporo Station, located 1 kilometer north of Odori Park. From there, you’ll find subway and bus services to transport you across the city. There are buses to Jozankei from central Sapporo and directly from the airport.
