Eilat Hotels

Israel’s southernmost city is a mere slip of Red Sea territory between Egypt and Jordan. However, it crams in spectacular landscapes into its small area, both above and below the sea. A generous curve of golden sand is bordered on one side by dazzling coral reef, and by formidable granite mountains on the other; a sheer wall behind the city. For families looking for an exhilarating Red Sea escape, for blissful beach days and world class scuba-diving, Eilat delivers superbly.

Things to see

Start with a stroll around Eilat Marina, where the holiday atmosphere begins with cosmopolitan gatherings, clinking glasses and music drifting from berthed yachts. It’s a visual splendour, with the hulking mountains reaching down to the glittering, blue harbour, a heavy sun burnishing the horizon. Keen divers will soon want to abandon the city chic for the call of the sea. Coral Beach slightly further down the coast is the place to go. Here, you can snorkel and scuba-dive in temperate waters, encountering some of the most diverse and beautiful coral life in the world. The reef is a mesmerising, colour-shifting thing, with schools of fish which burst from it like confetti. It’s not just divers and snorkelers who can appreciate this underwater world, however. The Underwater Observatory nearby is a futuristic, white tower containing an underwater chamber. It’s ideal for viewing the reef without the need for flippers and wetsuits.

How to get to Eilat

Eilat has a local airport located right in the middle of the city, close to the marina, and is served by flights from Tel Aviv. However, for international visitors, transferring in Tel Aviv can be time consuming and expensive, so a better option is to fly to the Ovda International Airport, located 50 minutes away from Eilat. The neighbouring airports of Taba in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan are also a short journey away from Eilat, and border crossings are straightforward. Bus or taxi services are available from the airports, and some of the resorts can arrange transfers for you.
