The largest holiday haven on western Croatia’s Losinj Island, the town of Mali Losinj is known for its picturesque harbour, idyllic beaches and historical charm. Built on a rich shipbuilding and seafaring heritage, the town is scattered with quaint churches and prim 19th century facades. With a peaceful ambiance and a green coastal backdrop adding to the scene, waterside dining, dolphin watching, fishing, windsurfing and lazy days on the beach are among its greatest pleasures. Yearly events include the New Year’s Fishing Spear.

Things to see

With its white sands, shady pine trees and warm teal waters, Cikat Beach is one of the town’s most blissful. Known for its clean water and calm conditions, the long stretch lures in families. The historic centrepiece of town, Mali Losinj Harbour is lined with a picture perfect collection of 19th century abodes. Home to bars and restaurants, whose al fresco tables spill out onto the promenade, it’s an ideal spot to sample the local seafood whilst looking out to sea. Just outside of town beside Veli Losinj Harbour, you’ll find the pretty and pink St Anthony’s Church. Dating back to the late 1700’s, the Baroque style building houses an enviable collection of Italian artwork. The Losinj Aromatic Garden is one of the island’s quirkier attractions. The charming parcel is home to a variety of indigenous island flora, with guides to explain their use in medicine and cooking.

There’s a top notch choice of hotels in Mali Losinj, with something to appeal to every holiday maker. Among them you’ll find sprawling resorts packed with amenities, historic harbour hotels that overlook the sparkling water, chic-budget apartment rentals and guesthouses set within characterful villas. Many of them feature onsite restaurants and bar lounges, whilst the larger properties also boast outdoor pools, hot tubs and fitness facilities. In some of the more upmarket hotels you can expect the addition of a full-service spa too. The hotels in Mali Losinj don’t scrimp on the in-room creature comforts either, with balconies, WiFi and satellite television to be found in most lodgings.

Where to stay

Centred on the harbour and old sea captain’s houses, the town of Mali Losinj has no shortage of offerings for tourists. You’ll find plenty of small shops, bars, seafood restaurants and hotels here, with the majority of the larger, amenity-laden resorts located nearer to Cikat Beach. A stone’s throw away, Cikat Forest Park provides camping facilities as an alternative. If you’d prefer a slightly quieter stay to the main town, a hotel in Losinj Island’s Veli Losinj area might suit you better. With its own small harbour, the colourful hub is home to the Church of St Anthony, a Venetian tower, and a scattering of bars and restaurants.

How to get to Mali Losinj

Losinj Airport only operates private charter flights so you’re travelling internationally the best place to land is Rijeka Airport, situated on the nearby Island of Krk. The airport serves a good handful of European destinations, with seasonal connections that include London, Berlin, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt. Once you’ve landed on the island you’ll need to catch a ferry. The quickest option is to hop aboard the daily catamaran service from Rijeka, which heads to Cres and Mali Losinj.
