Find out more about Yeovil
Pop on your hiking boots and explore Yeovil Country Park’s leafy trails, swathes of green gardens, and majestic lake-filled parkland, step back in time at grand Montacute House, or take a trip to historic honey-hued Sherborne. You can’t get bored with idyllic olde-worlde English countryside on your doorstep. At the heart of sleepy Somerset, the market town of Yeovil provides a central base and the largest array of shops, restaurants and cafés in this traditionally rural area.
Things to see
Often overshadowed by the mystical, magical north Somerset area of Glastonbury and Wells, south Somerset’s image as a predominantly agricultural area means that you won’t be vying for space among crowds of visitors that often overwhelm its northern neighbours. Take a stroll around the pleasant town centre if you fancy some shopping or lunch in a local café. Outside of town the south Somerset countryside is a place of rolling green hills dotted with sheep and cows, rural villages home to truly local pubs, and stately houses that look like they’ve just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel. In fact nearby Montacute House was used in the Sense and Sensibility adaptation starring Hugh Grant – you can’t get much more English than that. Admire the majestic Elizabethan architecture, including 2 mirroring gables decorated with clambering animal sculptures before taking an Austen-esque turn in the floral-scented formal gardens.
Hotels in Yeovil
Yeovil’s the perfect place to try some countryside living, either in a rural farmhouse guesthouse with log fires, hearty breakfasts and rural charm, or in a grand country house hotel offering period furniture – think roll-top baths and 4 poster beds – silver service dining and stunning landscaped gardens, perfect for relaxing among the peaceful rolling hills. Functional good value accommodation options are available in Yeovil itself – perfect if you’re looking for a cheap Yeovil hotel. Most of these are either B&Bs, guesthouses or traditional inns offering simple 2 and 3-star rated accommodation with WiFi, en-suite rooms and full English breakfast.
Where to stay
Yeovil town centre is easily walkable, so anywhere within a stone’s throw of the high street is perfect if you don’t have a car. Many rural villages offer at least one B&B, guesthouse or inn, providing countryside charm in the heart of a community, normally with a traditional pub. The countryside is a good option for peaceful getting-away-from-it-all downtime. Take a stroll through the landscape of leafy woodland, sheep-dotted pastures and wildlife-friendly hedgerows, stopping for a hearty roast dinner at a local pub, before heading back to your hotel for an evening glass of wine in the garden.
How to get to Yeovil
A quirk of railway history has left Yeovil with not 1 but 2 stations. Trains from Bristol and Weymouth arrive at Yeovil Pen Mill, while trains on the London to Penzance mainline arrive at Yeovil Junction. Both stations are a quick hop into town in a taxi or free shuttle bus. Coaches from around the UK also stop in Yeovil, and make an inexpensive alternative to the train. In order to explore the surrounding countryside and sights, it’s well worth hiring a car if not driving to the town, as local buses can be slow-going in this rural area.
