Find out more about Norwich

A dynamic cosmopolitan city peppered with ancient architecture, Norwich is a medieval city that keeps to a modern pace. A delight for history buffs, there's a solid Norma castle, stunning cathedral, grand squares, old churches, and half-timbered houses to explore. Add to the mix award-winning restaurants, superior shopping, and a calendar brimming with art and cultural events, there’s no shortage of things to do. The city also makes an attractive base for those who wish to explore the unspoiled north coastline, the Broads, and Norfolk’s picturesque countryside.

Things to see

Norwich Cathedral is the gawp-inducing jewel that dominates the city’s skyline. Complete with Romanesque and Gothic interiors, the cathedral’s 315ft spire is the second tallest in Britain. If you’re here for the architecture, then be sure to pay a visit to Blicking Hall too. Believed to be the birthplace of Anne Boleyn, the 17th Century manor is an ostentatious display of sumptuous interiors and romantic gardens. For those in need of decadent retail therapy, the city center’s Art Nouveau styled Royal Arcade will prove cathartic, with its array of shops and boutiques. As you continue on through the 247ft avenue from Gentleman’s Walk, you’ll eventually emerge in front of Norwich Castle. The palatial Norman fortress is now an eclectic museum, displaying artifacts from around the world. A sea of brightly striped canopies, the nearby 900 year old Norwich Market is a bargain hunter’s delight. With over 190 stalls, you can find all kinds of everything.

Hotels in Norwich

With all the historic architecture in the city, many hotels in Norwich reside behind antiquated facades, whilst providing modern day creature comforts like WiFi and flat-screen televisions within. Luxury accommodation includes grand city houses and romantic boutiques, whilst the surrounding countryside and coastline yields even more choice for the upmarket city breaker: Think sweeping country estates set within elegant grounds, complete with golf courses, spas, and scones at teatime. For those with more modest budgets, the choice is equally as varied and includes mid-range chain hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses.

Where to stay

A hotel in Norwich city center places you within brisk walking distance of all the major attractions. With Norwich’s convenient public transport and cycle lanes, further afield trips are easy. The city center itself offers something for absolutely everyone. Shoppers will be spoilt for choice with scores of high street names and trendy boutiques, including the fabled Jarrold Department Store. Glamorous restaurants, traditional English boozers, and prim ‘n’ proper tea rooms also line many of the city center’s quaint streets. For energetic nightlife, the Prince of Wales Road will see you into the small hours, while an evening of cultured entertainment can be had at the Theatre Royal.

How to get to

Norwich Airport is the primary gateway into the region for most international visitors. Just 4 miles from the city center, a taxi can whisk you into the action for just a small fare. Buses also run between the airport and the city every 15 minutes, for an even cheaper alternative. For those travelling to the city by train, Norwich Station will be your call. Known locally as Thorpe Station, the Great Eastern Main Line from London Liverpool Street terminates here, with typical journey durations of around 2 hours. Surrey Street bus station is the drop off point for people traveling by coach, though journeys will take considerably longer.
