Find out more about Penzance

Penzance Hotels

Penzance is situated at the most westerly point of Cornwall - a county that boasts an exceptional expanse of soft rolling hills and deep mystical forests. Penzance means ‘holy headland’, and the town’s calm, crystal-clear bay waters, narrow winding streets and diverse architectural and religious history make it an other-worldly holiday destination. Treat yourself to a hearty home-cooked Cornish pasty and a pint of locally crafted ale, and explore Penzance’s niche boutiques, seafood restaurants and gold-capped churches.

Things to see

Penzance boasts a thrilling history - once being a buzzing Medieval hub of treasure-hungry pirates - and this is evident throughout the town’s winding streets. Amble along Chapel Street, a narrow, smooth-sloping road strung with dozens of diverse architectural marvels. Visit St Mary’s white-stoned neo-gothic church and its palm-studded gardens, before strolling past the bold, bright pinks and yellows of the Egyptian House - an example of a rare, vogue and lavish design style dating back to the 18th century. For a touch of tropical surroundings, explore Morrab Gardens, a small public green space bursting with Mediterranean and sub-tropical flora and overlooked by a stucco Georgian villa. Finally, dig your toes deep into the soft golden sands at Penaznce’s wide, sweeping beachfront, which extends around the headland and gently slopes up to meet Cornwall’s luscious green forest-flecked hills.

Hotels in Penzance

Surrounding the town centre, Penzance hotels and B&Bs offer resplendent 3-star service with cosy queen-size rooms, convenient en-suites, complimentary WiFi and indulgent continental breakfasts - which make for the perfect way to start you resort day. Guesthouses provide stellar 4-star accommodation, being located slightly further afield and offering enormous rooms with 4-poster beds set in old Georgian stone houses, themselves surrounded by Eden-like gardens and grounds. For those travelling on a budget, traditional 2-star inns offer old-fashioned accommodation at very reasonable prices, and are only a short distance from the centre.

Where to stay

Stay near the centre for easy access to Penzance’s sights and excitement. The smell of fresh simmering fish and salty sea air fills your nostrils, and the melodious birdsong gently flowing from Morrab gardens will entice you to get out and explore the central streets. Of course, for unforgettable views across the deep blue rippling ocean, and with doorstep access to Penzance’s powdery sands, stay along the promenade road - where the sunrise across the sea makes for a beautifully romantic setting. Families may want to take advantage of the campgrounds at nearby Penwith Hertitage Coast for a holiday immersed in nature.

How to get to Penzance

Penzance Station - located next to the harbour - is a stately grey-stone building offering frequent services north throughout the country. Smaller trains trundle along the English Riviera to towns such as St Ives, Redruth and Truro, whereas longer direct trains speed to Bristol, Plymouth and Reading. To really arrive in style, take the Night Riviera from London - an overnight train that provides cosy sleeper cabins. The A30 essentially acts as a trunk road between London and Penzance, meaning that arriving by car is uncomplicated. Once in Penzance, exploring the town is best done on foot or by bicycle.
