Hexham Hotels

Sitting in the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall in England’s border country, the market town of Hexham is a crash course in time travel. The lively twice-weekly market has changed little in tradition, and even produce, since the 15th century, while the remains of Roman villas and towns lie scattered nearby, brought superbly to life by local performers. The mountains of the Northumberland National Park stretch out to the north, where you can almost hear the battle cries of Roman soldiers.

Things to see

Hexham Abbey is a true marvel for any would-be historian – this ancient Saxon place of worship contains beautiful Celtic carvings and dates back to AD 674. It has been in continuous use ever since that period and there are sensitive modern additions, such as the recent Tyrell stained glass window, which will become another part in the extraordinary tapestry of history of the abbey. As if that isn’t enough of a historical wonder, there are even older places to explore, such as the Corbridge Roman Site. This was once a bustling town along Hadrian’s Wall and it is a fascinating place to explore, where you can walk through original Roman streets and examine the hoard of objects excavated here. It’s also a great starting point for a walk along the wall, whether you plan to trek just a brief section or the whole 72 miles of this World Heritage site.

Hotels in Hexham

Hexham hotels are mostly independently-run guesthouses, with plenty of historic character and traditional charm. You’ll be treated to exceptional hospitality, and rooms tend to be individually-decorated, giving you a unique stay. There are both luxury and discount hotels in Hexham. At the top end of the scale, rooms are tastefully and elegantly furnished, with high-quality bedding and discreet modern amenities, such as flat-screen TVs and complimentary WiFi access. Onsite restaurants offer up delicious meals made with local ingredients. In the discount hotels, rooms are simpler, but comfortable, with tea and coffee makers available. A complimentary breakfast is served each morning.

Where to stay

Staying in the centre of Hexham allows you to soak up the incredible history of the place, as well as providing access to a range of local shops, restaurants and pubs. It is an excellent base for exploring the Northumberland countryside and Hadrian’s Wall. There are several hotels on offer, ranging from budget to four-star. Alternatively, you could stay in one of the luxury B&Bs located close to the Corbridge Roman Site. To get away from it all, choose one of the picturesque guesthouses located on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, where you’ll be spoiled with incredible views.
