Pitlochry Hotels

The town of Pitlochry is a cultural haven that hugs the crystal waters of the winding River Tummel. Hidden away in lush rolling hills, ruddy mountains punctuate the horizon. The town itself (visited by Queen Victoria in 1842, who praised the area) is a mix of sandy-hued, rustic streets with a sprinkling of distinctive Tudor architecture. The great outdoors is certainly one of the main attractions here, but there's also a lively cultural scene, especially in the form of theatre.

Things to see

Pitlochry is the perfect place to unwind - take your time and enjoy the peaceful country atmosphere. There's no better way to round of a leisurely stroll around the town and surrounding countryside than an evening at the theatre. Overlooking the glittering banks of the river, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre has a rich and varied programme, from elating light hearted musicals to hard hitting, thought provoking plays. It's also a great place to grab a drink and snack if you're passing by. Scotland is well known for its whisky, and if you fancy yourself as something of an aficionado, then heading to the neat white bricked Edradour Distillery will provide some fascinating insights into whisky production, as well as a taste, of course. The Pitlochry Powerstation and Dam offers a surprisingly beautiful sight, especially in the evening as part of a river walk, when the sandy-coloured buildings are bathed in yellowy light.

Hotels in Pitlochry

Despite its modest size, there are a good range of hotels in Pitlochry to choose from. You can spend evenings enjoying the view from spectacular, historic luxury hotels complete with golf courses, spas and restaurants, or snuggle up with a loved one in a rustic bed and breakfast hidden away in the town's twisting streets. It was Queen Victoria who first discovered Pitlochry's beauty, and since her visit the town has become a popular tourist destination. You can, as a result, expect to find a good mix of discount and mid range hotels here, which can be great for family trips as well as for business travellers.

Where to stay

For those looking for convenient access to the town centre and Pitlochry Station, then there are some impressive historic hotels along the Atholl Road that are moments away. These make a great choice for families too. If you're looking for epitome of luxury, then accommodation along the Knockfarrie Road is likely to meet all your expectations, and more, with rich natural views of the surrounding forests and river. It's also a great area to take slow, leisurely walks. For couples looking for something a little more homely, then there's plenty of B&Bs dotted around Lower Oakland and the surrounding area.

How to get to Pitlochry

The best way into the town is by train, and this in itself is a fantastic way to start your visit. If you're flying into Scotland, then direct trains run from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. The 2 hour journey will fly by as you pass through some of the most arresting scenery of the Highlands. Coach travel is a cheaper alternative, and can often be caught directly from the airport in either city. Walking around Pitlochry is the best form of travel once you've arrived, but there's also a few places to hire cycles for adventuring further into the surrounding countryside.
