Find out more about Lincoln

For a small city, Lincoln gives a lot. At its core lies the 12th Century cathedral which, perched on a hill, looms large over the city below. In the cathedral quarter you'll find narrow, cobbled streets flanked by Tudor houses, traditional pubs, and independent stores while the more modern high street is home to fashionable boutiques and trendy bars. The Brayford Waterfront area is a hub of activity and the ideal place to pull up a pew and gaze at the River Ritham's rippling waters and watch the local students at play.

Things to see

Dominating the city skyline, Lincoln Cathedral was once said to be the tallest building in the world, and its soaring spires, flying buttresses, and fine gothic architecture still dominate the city to this day. Inside, the nave is an expansive space filled with intricate medieval wood carvings and colorful Victorian stained glass windows which allow light to stream in, and perched high in the Angel Choir overlooking St Hugh's shrine, you'll find the cheeky Lincoln Imp. In the shadow of the cathedral lies the ancient stone bulk of Lincoln Castle where you can follow in the footsteps of prisoners with a climb down into its dark shackle-flanked dungeon and stand on the very tower where hangings once took place before coming up for air and heading up the observatory tower for panoramic views of the city and the castle walls. Another jewel in Lincoln's historic crown is Newport Arch which dates back to Roman times and still sees traffic pass beneath its honey-colored stones. Contemporary pleasures can be had at the Usher Gallery with its permanent art collection and rotating exhibitions, while nature lovers won't want to miss Joseph Banks Conservatory which houses exotic plants Banks collected while traveling with Captain Cook.

Hotels in Lincoln

Lincoln's not short on places to stay with a range of hotels catering to most budgets and tastes. For a slice of luxury, there are a handful of four-star hotels in Lincoln which offer amenities including WiFi and, in some cases, rooms with four poster beds and lavish furnishings. Mid-range hotels come in the form of big chain names (some with views of the rippling river waters) well as independent hotels and B&Bs all offering good value for money and comfortable rooms with flat-screen televisions, and tea and coffee making facilities. Outside of the city center, there are stunning country house hotels set in lush landscaped grounds too.

Where to stay

If you want to stay in the very heart of this historic city, a hotel in the cathedral quarter will put you within a short stroll of many must-see sights, and is just a stone's through from Steep Hill where the cathedral and castle sit. As you walk back down this cobbled medieval lane you'll potter past historic buildings before ending up at Lincoln's pedestrianized high street with its trendy shops, buzzing bars, and good selection of restaurants. You could also head to the surrounding countryside and book a Lincoln hotel that sits on the outskirts, and then make use of bus services to the center.

How to get to

Lincoln Central Station is situated on the East Coast Main Line and there's a daily fast rail service to London as well as more regular connections to the likes of Doncaster, Peterborough, Adwick, and Newark Castle and indirect links to most locations across mainland Britain. For travelers arriving by air, Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield airport is the nearest airport. Once you arrive in Lincoln, you'll find you can easily explore the city center on foot, with it taking less than an hour to walk from the most easterly point to west end of Lincoln.
