Cadiz Hotels

Don't be surprised if Cadiz does indeed surprise you. Said to be Europe's oldest city, it’s a curious mix of the old and the new. One minute you could be pottering around its winding, cobbled streets marvelling at medieval walls to the sound of the Atlantic's waves crashing against sea defences, the next you'll be enjoying freshly poached lobster in a chic waterside restaurant or browsing designer clothes in a modern boutique store. Then there's the beautiful beaches – you could you lose days sprawling out on the golden sands.

Things to see

The golden-domed Cadiz Cathedral is a must see while in the city - tour around its expansive interiors and climb the North Tower for views of the whole city and sea below. For even more views of the city, visit the Torre Tavira which is the highest point in the ancient old town and once the city's most important watchtower. As you peer through the camera obscura, located near the top, even distant objects will feel like you can touch them as the camera magnifies everything it sees. If you're up and about early, take a trip to the bustling Central Market where stalls are piled high with freshly-netted fish and locals noisily bid for the best deals of the day. When you're done sightseeing, Victoria Beach is the ideal place to kick back. Sprawl out on its golden sands, build sand castles with the kids or cool off in the sea. When it comes to refreshments, you won't have to go far as the beach is backed by a bustling promenade where you can find bars and restaurants aplenty.

Hotels in Cadiz

Cadiz city juts out into the sea and it almost completely surrounded by water. As such most of the hotels in Cadiz offer sea views and are mere moments from the coast. You can find a good range of 2 to 4 star properties here, with many offering convenient amenities including WiFi, tea and coffee making facilities and televisions in guestrooms. If you fancy catering for yourself while in Cadiz, there are a good number of apartments and condos available for rent which offer facilities including kitchens and separate living areas.

Where to stay

If you want to immerse yourself in the past, a stay in the centre of the Old Town will put in you ambling distance of the many ancient sights such as the towering city walls and cathedral. The old town's tight, twisting alleys make it difficult to drive around, but given its relatively small size, exploring on foot is easily doable. If you want to be moments from the beach, choose a hotel along the beachfront promenade and enjoy waking up to views of the golden sands and lapping waters. For designer shopping and chic, modern restaurants, the new town's an ideal base.

How to get to Cadiz

Those arriving from abroad can do so through Jerez de la Frontera Airport which is located around 21 kilometres from Cadiz's city centre. Taxis are on hand to whisk you to your hotel, and the journey usually takes around 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Buses also ply between Cadiz and the airport, although services can be a little erratic, and sometimes at weekends non-existent.
