Mayrhofen Hotels

From jaw-dropping black runs thrashing down the Penken Mountains to the easy-gliding slopes of the Ahorn range, Mayrhofen’s ski scene’s arguably Austria’s finest. Nestled in the Zillertal Valley, cruise the powder white slopes by day and hit the buzzing après-ski at night, with hordes of thrumming bars, beer-fuelled Gasthofs and pumping clubs. In summer, Mayrhofen reverts to type – alpine trails lined with daisies and buttercups, cows munching on green, green grass and Austrian folk music floating on the breeze.

Things to see

Mayrhofen’s white-washed slopes are impressive. Jump on the cable car to the Ahorn Ski Area – a favourite for families or those looking to gently cruise the mountainside. Its runs are renowned for being the most easy-going in the area, with vast views down the Zillertal Valley. Once you’ve built up an appetite head into town for a quick snack – curry wurst anyone? Glide down Ahorn’s valley run to really earn your lunch. Those seeking something more traditional can find plenty of authentic restaurants serving hearty Austrian meals of fish, game and an inevitable sausage or two. If you’re feeling energetic head up the Penkenbahn to try Mayrhofen’s most popular ski area – a huge action hotspot with plenty of slopes perfect for intermediate and experienced skiers, as well as a renowned terrain park brimming with snowboarders and free skiers. Thrill-seekers should try the Harakiri run – an iconic 78% gradient death-defying slope.

Hotels in Mayrhofen

Hospitality’s second nature for Mayrhofen’s locals, who’ve been welcoming visitors for many years. Luckily this means there’s plenty of hotel options. With a chameleon mix of authentic wooden chalet-filled alpine town and gnarly snowboarding, skiing hotspot, Mayrhofen really does cater for everyone, whether you fancy an uber-cool hangout hotel where you can rub shoulders with low-slung snowboarders, or a traditional wooden guesthouse where you can rest your feet in front of a crackling log fire while sipping on a creamy hot chocolate. Plenty of cheap Mayrhofen hotels also scatter the town, offering basic rooms and dorms with shared baths.

Where to stay

If you’re thinking of spending your time on Penken’s popular slopes, stay near to the Penkenbahn to make a quick morning dash from your hotel to the cable car, before the queues get there. To the south of town, the Ahorn Ski Area is really popular with families, so staying around the Ahornbahn is best if you’re going to be using these slopes most. Mayrhofen’s après-ski scene can be particularly boisterous, so those seeking winter-time peace should head to a smaller town, such as Finkenberg, where you can also get a cable car up to the Penken Ski Area.

How to get to Mayrhofen

International visitors can fly to Innsbruck, where you can get a train to Jennbach to catch the Zillerteilbahn that runs to Mayrhofen. The journey takes about 2 hours in total. Other options are to fly to Munich, where you need to get to Munich Hauptbahnhof to catch a train to Jennbach and then Mayrhofen, about 3 hours in all. It’s possible to hire a car in either city, though once in Mayrhofen you really won’t need it, as plenty of ski shuttles skip around the area, and cable cars run from Mayrhofen right into the Penken and Ahorn Ski Areas.
