Exploring Santiago

Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez Airport (SCL) is the main airport serving Chile and the capital Santiago, with flights from around the world. Delta and American Airlines serve from the USA, while Iberia flies from Madrid and Air France from Paris. Qantas also has flights from Sydney. Chilean flag carrier Lan operates most flights, with numerous connections from around the country and South America at large.

The airport handles around 15 million passengers a year, most of which are on domestic flights, making it one of South America’s busiest. The smart terminal building is fairly well supplied with duty-free shops as well as with restaurants and you’ll find ATMs and money changers.

There is also a hotel on the airport grounds—the well appointed Holiday Inn Santiago—along with a couple of options nearby including the Hilton Garden Inn Santiago Airport. These are very comfy and have good eating and transport options from the airport. Getting to town is typically by way of taxi or bus, the quickest of which go via the Costanera Norte tollway.

Sights nearby

Santiago is a bit of a hodgepodge of a place, a bustling city if there ever were one, though there are worthy sights to check out and many green areas to relax in. The Metropolitan Park is a must on a hot day, while the focal point, the Plaza De Armas, plays host to the cathedral.

Parque Metropolitano
The Metropolitan Park is a vast area off to the north of the city proper that can be done by highway from the airport and its hotels. The views over the park and the city are fine and there are some good walking trails in here, too. Get to the summit on foot or by way of the cable car; the top hosts the Cerro San Cristóbal statue. Also on site are a zoo, botanical garden and a couple of swimming pools.

Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino
The refurbished Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art is also this side of the city and can be got to by metro from town. The relics of various cultures, including the Incans and Mayans, are most impressive, with the Andes mummies and Mayan slab especially so. Descriptions are available in English as well.

Plaza De Armas
Santiago’s palm-tree clad main square is the top spot for some sightseeing, being home to many interesting buildings including the Santiago Cathedral. The swish Hotel Plaza de Armas is the most prominent accommodation option here, with a shuttle service from the airport, while Central Market is doable on foot. There are also lots of places eat with a Peruvian theme nearby.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez Airport has duty-free shopping in arrivals and departures areas, along with restaurants and cafés in Departures and up on the third floor. The best eating is in the onsite Holiday Inn Santiago Airport, while also nearby is the Diego de Almagro Airport Hotel. In town, the Central Market is perfect for eating traditional Peruvian foods on the cheap and there are many shopping malls. The Barrio Bellavista area of town is about best for entertainment of a night.

Public transport

Airport hotels have courtesy shuttles and the Holiday Inn is actually on site. Buses also run direct to the city, including the TurBus and CentroPuerto buses, the latter going more often. There’s also a shared shuttle service from the airport and you can be dropped off at the Pajaritos metro stop. Stick to the official taxis only, which have badges, and avoid using the buses when in town as they are a nightmare to work out. Use the metro if you can.
