Relaxation is the name of the game in Kochel, and almost everywhere you turn you'll find stunning nature trails, serene landscapes and unrivalled tranquillity. Languid boating can be enjoyed on both the Kochelsee and Walchensee lakes, while in the winter months the region becomes a white wonderland that's just begging to be explored on snowshoes or skis. There are some epic cross-country strails to cross, as well as downhill exhilaration at Herzogstand. The village itself has understandably played host to a number of artists over the years, the most famous being German expressionist Franz Marc. You can visit his grave in the village cemetery, and also discover more about his life at the Franz Marc Museum. Finally, just outside the village is the Walchensee Hydroelectric Power station, one of the largest of its kind in Germany. Along with the panoramic scenery, it makes for an interesting day out.

How to get to Kochel am See

Flying in to Munich is the best choice overall, and from here you can catch a train to the village itself. Walking to your hotel, unless you're staying a little way out of the village, is also easy. Alternatively, if you're planning on driving, then you can simply follow the A95 from Munich. There are also plenty of buses, and while they can take a little longer, the panoramic views will help pass the time. There's plenty of local transport to be found in Kochel am See, from bus services to taxis, but walking is often the most enjoyable way to get around.
