Luebeck Hotels

Luebeck isn't just one of the most historic cities in Germany – it's one of the prettiest too, with the medieval old town situated on its very own island on the Trave River. Here you'll discover an atmospheric warren of narrow winding streets, cosy courtyards and hidden gem eateries, all overlooked by the centuries-old church steeples that give the city its striking skyline. You also have to try the local delicacy, marzipan – even if you're a sceptic, the famous local version has to be tried.

Things to see

Luebeck is not a city that's short of staggering old religious landmarks, and one of the stand-out examples is Luebeck Cathedral, a fortress of red bricks topped with twin steeples that can be seen for miles around. It's not quite the symbol of the city, though – that honour falls on Holsten Gate, or Holstentor, the old Brick Gothic city gate whose round towers and central archway have made it an instantly recognisable piece of ancient architecture. During the warmer seasons, though, the biggest draw of Luebeck is its beach-side borough, Travemünde. Once referred to as the German St Tropez, it's one of the historic resorts of the country (the great Russian writer Dostoevsky was a fan), and it still has the romance of the old days. Wander the beach, with its cute roofed wicker chairs, allow yourself to be tempted by the fish restaurants and cake shops and relax with some German beers in the blazing sun. And look out for the gushing field of fountains at the front of the promenade.

Hotels in Luebeck

It really doesn't matter what your budget is – you can find hotels in Luebeck that will tick all the boxes. If you're looking to be as cost-effective as possible, there are plenty of straightforward, no-frills pads that offer comfortable rooms and essential services like WiFi access. Alternatively, you can always splash out a little more for lavish accommodation, with some larger hotels also offering indoor swimming pools, steam rooms and saunas, not to mention high-end dining. The mid-range is also well represented with the major international chains having hotels in the city, all of which offer the sort of reliable service you expect.

Where to stay

As well as there being a huge variety of hotels in Luebeck, you also get to pick the location that's right for you. If you're here for the beaches on the Baltic coast, then you might want to think about a hotel in Travemünde itself. Here you can find accommodation that's right on the seafront, with guestrooms that open out onto balconies boasting sweeping views. If you're mainly here for a city break in Luebeck, on the other hand, you can stay in one of the many hotels situated on the central island itself. There you'll have the quaint landmarks and huddled cafes and restaurants on your doorstep.

How to get to Luebeck

The most convenient gateway to the city, in terms of distance alone, is Luebeck Airport. The only snag is that very few services fly to and from here, so it is far more likely you'll fly into a larger international airport, such as the one near Hamburg. From there, it's just a matter of getting to Luebeck by road. There are excellent transport links and if you want to make the most of your stay in this part of Germany you should consider having your own rented car.
