Guangzhou Hotels

The giant candlestick-shaped Canton Tower is a perfect representation of Guangzhou - a mega-city that is unashamedly reaching for the sky. China's third largest city has fully embraced modernism, and the serrated skyline reflects the prosperity of this colossal, constantly expanding urban hub. There's plenty of culture and historical significance to be found in between the tall buildings and banks, however, with Ming-dynasty temples, leafy parks, and thriving nightspots all in healthy supply.

Things to see

The gauze-like exterior of Canton Tower twists dramatically as it rises from the ground and, as one of the tallest structures in the world, the building provides a spectacular focal point for the city's skyline. Its LED fueled glow sprays a kaleidoscope of luminous colors into the night's sky, dramatically reflected by the wide river below. For a taste of Guangzhou life, head to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street to spend and eat among the smells of grilled squid and aromatic tea that drift through the air from the stalls of street vendors. Glass windows, built into the street itself, provide a physical portal back in time to the ancient road that lies buried beneath the new street, so you can walk along a path smoothed by feet from the Ming era. For something a little different, head out to Guangzhou Zoo, where you can watch pandas leaning back to chomp lazily on bamboo sticks, and see pale yellow snakes – as thick as your thigh – slowly devouring huge mice. Or, leave the city behind and touch the sky at nearby Baiyun Mountain - where you can take in the scale of Guangzhou from a distance as you float through the air in a cable car, before admiring the booming power of the area's crashing waterfalls.

Hotels in Guangzhou

Offering the perfect contrast to the cacophony of noise and activity on the streets of Guangzhou, the city's luxury hotels provide a slice of solitude and serenity. Relax in a bath covered by floating yellow petals, before tasting herbal tea - in a garden surrounded by protective green trees. The cheapest Guangzhou hotels also offer great value, allowing you to enjoy free WiFi - and a mattress that melds to your body as you drift to sleep – for a very reasonable price. Hotel staff in the city are friendly and efficient, and will be happy to oblige with any translation issues.

Where to stay

Overlooked by the flat, eco-friendly Pearl River Tower, the Tianhe district is well connected to the city center by metro, and offers some of the best hotels. The area is home to the shopping mecca that is TeeMall, and Tianhe Stadium - where gargantuan buildings from the financial district loom above the stands – so there's plenty to keep you busy. Or, you could choose to stay in the sprawling Yuexiu district. Get up early one day to feel the energy in Yuexiu Park, as residents young and old exercise in the fresh air, before you pay a visit to Zhenhai Tower afterwards. The 650 year-old, tiered building, gives spectacular views of the city's skyline from Yuexiu Hill.

How to get to Guangzhou

One of China's busiest airports - Baiyun International - serves Guangzhou, with direct flights from across the world touching down. The airport is around 28 kilometers from downtown, and line 1 buses provide a simple link. You can also hop on metro line 3 if you'd rather avoid the congestion. Visitors to Guangzhou frequently choose to visit Hong Kong during their stay, and a streamlined train connects the locations in just 2 hours.
