Dive the crystal clear waters of the warm Gulf of Thailand on the hunt for elusive Whale Sharks and friendly dolphin pods, clamber through trailing jungle undergrowth on the sloping mountain reaches, or relax in decadent spas, enjoying massages and tranquility on the isolated Redang Island. This little atoll is characterized by pristine beaches, devoid of crowds of people. The blue sky meets the bluer waters on a distance horizon, and luxury resorts welcome travelers with decadent bedrooms and fine-dining restaurants.

Things to see

Vast white sands, bright blue glistening sea, and towering mountains of green rainforest welcome you to Redang Beach on Malaysia’s popular island paradise. Largely undeveloped except for a main beach resort, this slice of paradise is a haven for snorkelers and scuba divers on the hunt for rarely seen Whale Sharks that migrate through these waters. Thatched parasols hug the fringe of palm trees that edge the beach and single hulled wooden boats lie half beached on one side, ready for the fishermen who leave before dawn. Berjaya Beach sits in the north of the island, in a curving bay where the powdery sands slope gently into the calm waters. The rocky coastline meets the sea in a blanket of green tropical foliage and hiking trails follow the undulations of the coast around the headland. The jungle can be explored on foot, following organized tours as you learn about the bright red birds that flit through the trees, and on dive trips, the hidden reefs are home to some of the region’s most interesting marine life, as well as popular barracudas, and black-tipped reef sharks.

Where to stay

Redang Island is quiet and peaceful. The pristine beaches that surround its coastline are largely undisturbed. There certainly aren’t swamping crowds of people here. No garish nightclubs or neon-lit bars disturb the peace, although you will find lounges and quieter bars in the individual resorts, because the hotels in Redang Island are the only built-up areas on this small atoll. The east coast, at Redang Beach, is the most populous area, where you’ll find some conveniences and concessions available outside the main resorts.

How to get to Redang Island

There’s a small airstrip on Redang Island, operated by Berjaya Air, a local transport provider. Flights arrive here daily from Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, although travelers who route through Kuala Terengganu can take the longer but less expensive route to the island by ferry boat. Departures head from Merang on the mainland, and take a little over an hour to cross. Once on the island, most hotels provide their own onward transport. There aren’t many roads here, and no towns, so there’s no real need for transport of your own.
