Things to see

Visit Betws-y-Coed to immerse yourself in stunning natural beauty. Nestled inside the National Park, it’s a perfect base for hiking, pony trekking or biking along Snowdonia’s abundant trails. Pick up any kit you need from one of Betws’ outdoor gear stores, before heading for some serious hill-walking, cycling or trekking along mountain paths. If you’d prefer a sedate stroll through the countryside amble west of town to Swallow Falls’ frothy cascading rapids, set amongst verdant woodland, or head to the fern and lichen-filled conifer woods of Gwydyr Forest Park. If you don’t even fancy wandering that far, spend a few hours meandering about town, crisscrossing over its various notable bridges. Don’t miss Waterloo Bridge – a wide iron structure commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. To get away from it all, drive to 13th century Dolwyddelan Castle – its slate stone parapets cast an eerie figure against Snowdonia’s bleak skies.

Where to stay

Betws’ location inside the National Park means it’s so easy to pop on your hiking boots, stroll through town and out onto the trails and way-signed footpaths of the Snowdonia hills. The town itself is petite enough that you should never be much of a walk from the shops, restaurants and natural beauty hotspots. If you fancy some real seclusion, head out into the Snowdonia countryside. A few rural guesthouses and hotels are dotted around. Nearby Swallow Falls has the additional benefit of idyllic waterfalls, while Gwydyr Forest Park’s magical woodland setting appeals to true nature lovers.
